Call for Apple to go even greener

Greenpeace has given a cautious welcome to Apple's ambitions to be more environmentally friendly.

In a statement Steve Jobs said the company would stop using toxic and hazardous chemicals in manufacturing.

Greenpeace praised Apple for its decision to phase out the most harmful chemicals but said the electronics giant could do more.

The group wants Apple to improve its recycling policy and stop dumping old products in other parts of the world.

Gadget dump

In the statement Apple explained what it had already done to clean up its manufacturing processes and laid out how it was planning to make them greener.

Mr Jobs said in the statement that Apple's policy of not talking about its future plans had led to misconceptions about its green credentials.

"It is certainly clear that we have failed to communicate the things that we are doing well," wrote Mr Jobs.

Apple's future plans include removing arsenic in displays by the end of 2008. By the same date it will stop using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

Both PVC and BFRs are considered hazardous because they do not break down when disposed of and can accumulate in body tissue and cause a variety of health problems.

It also said it would start using LED backlighting for displays instead of mercury "when technically and economically feasible".

The statement of Apple's green credentials comes in the wake of criticism by environmental groups. In early April Greenpeace put Apple bottom of its rankings of green electronics firms.

The company's headquarters and conferences have been picketed by banner-waving activists calling on Apple to be greener.

In its own statement Greenpeace said Apple's announcement was "something we've all been waiting for" and it praised the decision to stop use of PVC and BFRs before other computer makers.

But Greenpeace said Apple still had ground to make up on its recycling policy.

The green group pointed out that Apple's pledge not to dump returned gadgets and computers in Asia and India only applied to US customers. It called on Apple to offer a global takeback and recycling service.

It said it wanted to see an Apple that was "green to the core".

Intel steps up cheap laptop race

Intel has teamed up with the world's largest maker of computer motherboards to produce laptops for the developing world.

The laptop has been dubbed the Eee PC - and will sit alongside Intel's Classmate which is also aimed at the developing world.

The partnership with Asustek is the latest twist in a developing battle between the chipmaker and rival group, the One Laptop per Child foundation.

Both plan to offer sub-$200 laptops.

War of words

The Eee laptop will use one of Intel's mobile processors - although exactly which one has not been specified. It will have a seven inch (18cm) display, weigh in at 2lb (0.89kg), with a flash memory hard drive and wireless capacity.

The laptop will sell for around $200 (£100).

Both this and Intel's forthcoming mass produced Classmate will be in direct competition with One Laptop Per Child 's (OLPC) robust green and white machine, which although known as the $100 laptop will initially sell for $176 (£88).

The race to provide cheap laptops to the developing world has turned into a bitter war of words in recent days. Web pioneer Nicholas Negroponte, who heads up the OLPC foundation, has accused Intel of trying to undermine his initiative.

Professor Negroponte, who also founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's famous Media Labs, believes that the decision of his not-for-profit organisation to use processors designed by Intel's main competitor AMD lies at the heart of the conflict.

Intel denies that its efforts undermine the work of the OLPC team.

"We are going to need hundreds of millions of machines and that's going to take a whole industry to provide. There is plenty of room for numerous vendors, " said George Alfs, a spokesman for Intel.

Universal 'to revise iTunes deal'

Universal Music Group is reported not to be renewing its annual contract to sell its music through Apple's iTunes.

The New York Times quoted unnamed executives as saying that Universal had decided to have monthly deals instead.

That would allow Universal to remove songs by some or all of its artists quickly if there are disagreements on terms and pricing in the future.

But the San Francisco Chronicle carried a denial from Apple, which said that talks were still continuing.

"We are still negotiating with Universal," the newspaper quoted an Apple spokesman as saying.

"Their music is still on iTunes and their not re-signing is just not true," he added.

Flat charges

There have been disagreements between Apple and record labels in the past about the pricing and protection of the songs on iTunes.

Apple has stuck to a flat charge of 99 cents per song in the US since iTunes was launched four years ago.

But many of the labels are understood to want to be able to charge more for popular songs and less for songs that they are trying to promote.

There have also been objections to the copy-protection that iTunes uses, which means that iTunes downloads cannot be played on MP3 players other than Apple's iPod.

In February, Apple boss Steve Jobs called on labels to allow iTunes to remove the copy-protection. EMI has since begun to sell "premium" versions of its tracks through iTunes without copy protection.

But some labels have refused to have the protection removed and say that Apple should instead license its technology so that its copy-protected songs can be played on other devices.

Shares fall

Both Apple and Universal have much at stake if their relationship deteriorates.

If Universal pulls its catalogue from iTunes then the store would lose access to record labels that account for one out of every three new releases sold in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

On the other hand, iTunes is by far the most popular download store, with a 70% market share, according to the NPD Group.

Reports of a dispute hit Apple shares on Monday - they closed down 78 cents at $121.26 on Nasdaq, although that was also linked to some disappointment about the first weekend's sales of its new iPhone.

Xbox chief defects to games firm

Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft's gaming business, is leaving to join game maker Electronic Arts.

For the past four years Mr Moore has been the public face of Microsoft's Xbox and PC gaming business, and oversaw the launch of the Xbox 360.

He will join Electronic Arts as the head of its sports games division which makes some of its most popular titles.

He will be replaced by Don Mattrick, a former EA senior executive who has worked as a consultant at Microsoft.

The news about Mr Moore comes only weeks after Microsoft announced it would be spending $1.15bn to fix faulty Xbox 360 consoles.

Microsoft said nothing should be read into the timing of Mr Moore's departure.

On joining the game firm Mr Moore will receive a $1.5m golden handshake to offset future bonuses he was due from Microsoft.

At the EA division he will oversee the development of popular game franchises such as Madden NFL football, NBA Live and Fifa Soccer. About one-third of EA's revenue comes from sales of sports-related games.

Mr Moore, a Liverpudlian, joins EA shortly after a major re-organisation that saw it split into four divisions in a bid to become more competitive. In its last quarter, EA reported losses of $25m.

Before joining Microsoft in 2003, Mr Moore was president of Sega America and prior to that head of marketing at Reebok International.

He is scheduled to join EA Sports in September whilst Don Mattrick will be on Microsoft's fulltime payroll in August.

Blockbuster to focus on Blu-ray

Film rental firm Blockbuster is to rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format at 1,450 US stores.

The move is viewed as a blow for the rival Toshiba-backed HD DVD format - which has been battling against the Blu-ray format, supported by Sony.

Blockbuster said that consumers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD in the 250 stores where both were available.

The limited choice of titles in the HD DVD format was also a factor in focusing on Blu-ray, Blockbuster said.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbusters, told the Associated Press news agency.

Mr Smith added that most studios were offering films on Blu-ray, with the exception of Universal which has been supplying films on HD DVD alone.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's move was short sighted, and had been prompted by the success of films released exclusively in the Blu-ray format in early 2007 such as Casino Royale and Spider Man.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group.

The HD DVD format will still be available at Blockbuster in 250 of its stores as well as via the internet.
