Cisco Acquires Social Networking Company

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), whose core business is selling the routers and switches that direct data traffic over computer networks, said it has acquired a small social networking company that allows businesses to create MySpace-like communities on their Web sites.

Cisco said Friday that it was paying an undisclosed amount to acquire privately held Five Across Inc., an 11-person San Francisco company whose software allows companies to add user-interaction functions and multimedia-sharing capabilities to their Web sites.

Five Across' publishing platform allows users to create personal Web pages and post photos, videos and audio clips, much like the proprietary system used by News Corp. (NWS)'s MySpace.
Cisco said the acquisition, its 116th since 1993, is the company's first in the social networking space but likely not the last. The deal is expected to close within the current fiscal quarter.
Analysts said the acquisition helps further Cisco's expansion beyond its role as purely a network equipment provider and into helping distribute the media that drives bandwidth consumption and even more network upgrades.

Danielle Levitas, a senior analyst at market researcher IDC, said the Five Across acquisition could help Cisco win greater access to a wide range of companies, particularly those in media and entertainment, looking to upgrade their Web sites to connect with customers.
"I actually see this as benefiting their core business - if they can promote users using their broadband more, that's huge for them," Levitas said.

Cisco has profited mightily in recent quarters from surging sales of its routers and switches as service providers and other companies scramble to upgrade their networks to prepare for the next generation of video and other bandwidth-intensive downloads.
Cisco, which was sitting on nearly $21 billion in cash at the end of the second quarter, has been rapidly expanding by acquiring companies that capitalize on the products and services that utilize the network itself.

The company's largest recent acquisition was its $6.9 billion purchase last year of Scientific-Atlanta Inc., the world's second-largest cable television box seller.
Last month, Cisco also announced it was paying $830 million in cash and stock to acquire IronPort Systems Inc., a maker of anti-spam and antivirus security products. That deal is also expected to close in the current quarter.

Investors have cheered the San Jose-based company's robust earnings growth, sending its shares up 45 percent from a year ago and creating more than $51 billion in additional shareholder wealth.

Cisco's stock closed up 5 cents to $28.14 on Thursday before the acquisition was announced.

Corporate history

Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner (Bachelor of Science from California State University, Chico, Masters in Econometrics from Claremont University, Masters in Statistics and Computer Science from Stanford University), a married couple that worked in computer operations staff at Stanford University, founded Cisco Systems in 1984. Bosack adapted multiple-protocol router software originally written by William Yeager, another staff employee who had begun the work years before Bosack arrived from the University of Pennsylvania, where Bosack had received his bachelor's degree.

While Cisco was not the first company to develop and sell a router (a device that forwards computer traffic between two or more networks), it did create the first commercially successful multi-protocol router to allow previously incompatible computers to communicate using different network protocols. As the Internet Protocol (IP) has become a standard, the importance of multi-protocol routing as a function has declined. Today, Cisco's largest routers are marketed to route primarily IP packets and MPLS frames.

In 1990, the company went public and was listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Bosack and Lerner walked away from the company with $170 million and later divorced.

During the Internet boom in 1999, the company acquired Cerent Corp., a start-up company located in Petaluma, California, for about $7 billion. It was the most expensive acquisition made by Cisco at that time. The only bigger acquisition is Scientific Atlanta.

In late March 2000, at the height of the dot-com boom, Cisco was the most valuable company in the world, with a market capitalisation of more than $500 billion. In 2007, with a market cap of about $165 billion, it is still one of the most valuable companies.

Using acquisitions, internal development, and partnering with other companies, Cisco has made inroads into many network equipment markets outside routing, including Ethernet switching, remote access, branch office routers, ATM networking, security, IP telephony, and others. In 2003, Cisco acquired Linksys, a popular manufacturer of computer networking hardware and positioned it as a leading brand for the home and end user networking market (SOHO).
Cisco has set up Cisco Networking Academies in 150 countries aimed at teaching students to design and maintain computer networks.

Cisco Logo used until 2006

The name "Cisco" is an abbreviation of San Francisco. According to John Morgridge, employee 34 and the company's former president, the founders hit on the name and logo while driving to Sacramento to register the company -- they saw the Golden Gate Bridge framed in the sunlight.

The name cisco Systems (with the lowercase "c") continued in use within the engineering community at the company long after the official company name was changed to Cisco Systems, Inc. Users of Cisco products can still see the name ciscoSystems occasionally in bug reports and IOS messages.
The company's logo reflects its San Francisco name heritage: it represents a stylized Golden Gate Bridge. In October 2006, Cisco publicly launched a new logo that is graphically simpler and more stylized than the original.

I fear for Juniper that they may have opened pandora's box.

This recent lawsuit came to me an email yesterday from a colleague as well as from as well as in my personal email email. Apparently, Juniper Networks is attempting to sue anonymous users.

"The Sunnyvale, Calif., company filed a lawsuit in the California Superior Court of Santa Clara on December 14 claiming that it had been defamed and libeled by up to 10 persons unknown.

Read the full story from Light Reading. I admire how Light Reading is responded to this, although they are not the target, it attacks their credibility. (and the rest of the internet) They sent out a poll and posted results, which I participated in. This has been heavily discussed at Slashdot, there are over 250 comments.

I don’t have the time to scour light readings bulletin boards to find out exactly how harmful this was, (nor does it matter) but companies need to be realistic about attempting to censor opinions, it just doesn’t work, and could create a backlash.

Recommendations to Juniper
Without knowing more, I would suggest to Juniper to listen to this buzz from detractors, acknowledge their opinion, ask them to public ally state their opinion and stance, then address it like a responsible company should.

Every company will have detractors and defamers, this is the biting realism that today's open communcations provides. Most importantly, how a company responds to a bad situation is what is measured.

Juniper is not alone, read how other companies have been responding to bad press. (there are and will be many more)

It did cross my mind that this could be just a message from Juniper to detractors to please sit down, and it could even be a clever 'back-buzz' technique to generate buzz, doubtful, but possible.

In my opinion only, the internet/blogs/message boards are incredible resources for companies to listen to consumers, collaborate and then build better products. No matter how bad you're defamed on the web, you can control the situation, perhaps create a corporate blog where you can defend on your own ground.

by the way, blogs are a lot cheaper than lawyers.

These persons, referred to as "Does 1-10" in the court complaint (as in "John Doe," or anonymous), are being accused by Juniper of posting harmful statements about the company and its executives on Light Reading's message boards."

During their working life, rechargeable batteries in a laptop are repeatedly re-charged after they have been drained. The charging is accomplished by applying externally supplied electrical current through an adopter. The electrical current enters in the laptop battery and reverses the chemical process which occur in the battery while it is in use. Devices to supply the appropriate current are called notebook battery chargers.

Most of today's laptop computers are powered with li-ion batteries. Rechargeable notebook batteries have a tendency to self-discharge. This means they discharge even while not in active use. This self-discharging process accelerates at higher temperatures. It is not advisable to leave them unused for long time, due to their poor shelf life.

Under good conditions, a typical li-ion battery can supply around 500 discharge/charge cycles, which is equivalent to 2 to 3 years of service, from the time the battery goes through the production process. As a battery is put into regular use, capacity loss occurs as a result of increased internal resistance caused by cell oxidation. Eventually, the resistance becomes so high that the battery can no longer deliver the needed energy to the laptop, even though the energy is still present in the notebook battery. This usually marks the end of the useful life of a battery. It is believed that there are no remedies to restore the battery capacity when it is worn out. Heating the battery will improve its performance only momentarily and can not be considered a long term solution.

There are many free utilities available on Internet and from software developers that help in the testing of battery status. A typical utility constantly revises its estimate of remaining battery life, by measuring the time it takes to run it down. Such utilities are particularly useful when batteries read 100 percent when fully charged, but only run a few minutes before they run out completely. A power center would accurately show a 100 percent charge but it would also show about 5 minutes of time left.

A curriculum without content delivers students without knowledge

How bad is the state's new education curriculum, soon to be enforced in all schools public and private right across the country? When even the teacher unions know that things "have gone too far" with the state-enforced education curriculum, then it might just be possible that things really have gone too far.

It is quite literally the curriculum you have when you don't have a curriculum: it is explicitly a curriculum without content. The new curriculum "will teach pupils how to hold a conversation or ask for help rather than remember facts, historic dates or periodic tables."

The new curriculum, to be released in November and introduced in 2009, focuses on the process of learning, rather than content.
For example, social science students will be marked for taking action to make their community a better place to live, rather than remembering facts about a society on the other side of the world. Science students might be tested on whether they know how to design an experiment, rather than whether they remember what the result should be.

Mary Chamberlain, overseeing the project for the Education Ministry, says that although people are "rattled" by the changes, "there's no use (students) being little knowledge banks walking around on legs. We've got computers, we don't need people walking around with them in their heads... People just have to get used to that."

Mary Chamberlain is an example of the educational model she proposes: someone who has nothing at all in her head. Miseducating a whole new generation in her image is not the answer; removing her and her ilk from the miseducation of NZ children is clearly urgent.

Even the teachers union, the PPTA, called this "a paradigm shift that has gone too far." Roger Moses, principal of Wellington College, explains why: with its focus on "skills" rather than knowledge, this will he says see New Zealand children growing up ignorant.

But none of this is new: the process has been going on for years -- this latest promise of miseducation simply continues a process that has been under way for years. Writing in 'Free Radical #76,' George Reisman summed up the Chamberlain view: "With little exaggeration, the whole of contemporary education can be described as a process of encumbering the student’s mind with as little knowledge as possible."

Nonsense like Chamberlain's does not emerge fully grown. In the following excerpts from his article, Reisman explains where this nonsense comes from, and what has already been the result. Settle back and read his incisive dissection of modern miseducation. It's good:

It is sometimes observed that most of today’s high school and college graduates have very little education in science and mathematics and thus do not understand and cannot properly appreciate modern technology. There is considerable merit in these observations, but the problem goes much deeper. Namely, from the earliest grades, the prevailing methodology of contemporary education systematically encourages irrational skepticism ...

To explain how this is the case, I must briefly digress into the history of philosophy.

At the end of the eighteenth century, Immanuel Kant foisted on the intellectual world a distorted version of what reason is, namely, a faculty divorced from knowledge of the real world and limited to awareness of a world of mere appearances created by the human mind itself. ...

For many years now it has been Kant's distorted 'Romantic' version of reason that has been foisted upon students worldwide. Ms Chamberlain and her comrades now wish to make that explicit. Reisman explains how the undercutting of education is explicitly based upon the undercutting of knowledge espoused by 'Romantic' era philosophers.

Romanticism ... follows on the direct foundation of Kantianism... In its essentials, the philosophy of Romanticism is the guiding principle of contemporary education. Exactly like Romanticism, contemporary education holds that the valuable portion of our mental life has no essential connection with our ability to reason and with the deliberate, controlled use of our conscious mind—that we possess this portion of our mental life if not in our sleep, then nevertheless as small children. This doctrine is clearly present in the avowed conviction of contemporary education that creativity is a phenomenon that is separate from and independent of such conscious mental processes as memorization and the use of logic...

Now, properly, education is a process by means of which students internalize knowledge: they mentally absorb it through observation and proof, and repeated application. Memorization, deduction, and problem solving must constantly be involved. The purpose is to develop the student’s mind—to provide him with an instantaneously available storehouse of knowledge and thus an increasingly powerful mental apparatus that he will be able to use and further expand throughout his life. Such education, of course, requires hard work from the student. Seen from a physiological perspective, it may be that what the process of education requires of the student through his exercises is an actual imprinting of his brain.

Yet, under the influence of the philosophy of Romanticism, contemporary education is fundamentally opposed to these essentials of education. It draws a distinction between “problem solving,” which it views as “creative” and claims to favor, and “memorization,” which it appears to regard as an imposition on the students, whose valuable, executive-level time, it claims, can be better spent in “problem solving.” Contemporary education thus proceeds on the assumption that the ability to solve problems is innate, or at least fully developed before the child begins school. It perceives its job as allowing the student to exercise his native problem-solving abilities, while imposing on him as little as possible of the allegedly unnecessary and distracting task of memorization.

In the elementary grades, this approach is expressed in such attitudes as that it is not really necessary for students to go to the trouble of memorizing the multiplication tables if the availability of pocket calculators can be taken for granted which they know how to use; or go to the trouble of memorizing facts of history and geography, if the ready availability of books and atlases containing the facts can be taken for granted, which facts the students know how to look up when the need arises. In college and graduate courses, this approach is expressed in the phenomenon of the “open-book examination,” in which satisfactory performance is supposedly demonstrated by the ability to use a book as a source of information, proving once again that the student knows how to find the information when he needs it.

With little exaggeration, the whole of contemporary education can be described as a process of encumbering the student’s mind with as little knowledge as possible. The place for knowledge, it seems to believe, is in external sources—books and libraries—which the student knows how to use when necessary. Its job, its proponents believe, is not to teach the students knowledge but “how to acquire knowledge”—not to teach them facts and principles, which it holds quickly become “obsolete,” but to teach them “how to learn.” Its job, its proponents openly declare, is not to teach geography, history, mathematics, science, or any other subject, including reading and writing, but to teach “Johnny”—to teach Johnny how he can allegedly go about learning the facts and principles it declares are not important enough to teach and which it thus gives no incentive to learn and provides the student with no means of learning.

The results of this type of education are visible in the hordes of students who, despite years of schooling, have learned virtually nothing, and who are least of all capable of thinking critically and solving problems. When such students read a newspaper, for example, they cannot read it in the light of a knowledge of history or economics— they do not know history or economics; history and economics are out there in the history and economics books, which, they were taught, they can “look up, if they need to.” They cannot even read it in the light of elementary arithmetic, for they have little or no internally automated habits of doing arithmetic. Having little or no knowledge of the elementary facts of history and geography, they have no way even of relating one event to another in terms of time and place.

Such students, and, of course, the adults such students become, are chronically in the position in which to be able to use the knowledge they need to use, they would first have to go out and acquire it. Not only would they have to look up relevant facts, which they already should know, and now may have no way even of knowing they need to know, but they would first have to read and understand books dealing with abstract principles, and to understand those books, they would first have to read other such books, and so on. In short, they would first have to acquire the education they already should have had.

Properly, by the time a student has completed a college education, his brain should hold the essential content of well over a hundred major books on mathematics, science, history, literature, and philosophy, and do so in a form that is well organized and integrated, so that he can apply this internalized body of knowledge to his perception of everything in the world around him. He should be in a position to enlarge his knowledge of any subject and to express his thoughts on any subject clearly and logically, both verbally and in writing. Yet, as the result of the miseducation provided today, it is now much more often the case that college graduates fulfill the Romantic ideal of being “simple, uneducated men.”

Such a process of miseducation is so far advanced that few now really see it, particularly not those already miseducated. Ms Chamberlain and the other writers of this proposed 'curriculum without content' are banking on the miseducation of earlier generations to blind everyone to what's happening right in front of their nose. Contemporary education is responsible for the growing prevalence of irrational skepticism. The students subjected to it do not acquire actual knowledge. They have no firm foundation in a base of memorized facts and they have not acquired any solid knowledge of principles because their education has avoided as far as possible the painstaking processes of logical proof and repeated application of principles, which latter constitutes a vital and totally legitimate form of memorization. Such students go through school “by the seat of their pants.” They are forever “winging it.” And that is how they go through life as adults. It is impossible for them to have genuine understanding of anything that is beyond the realm of their daily experience, and even of that, only on a superficial level. To such people, almost everything must appear as an arbitrary assertion, taken on faith. For their education has made them unfit to understand how things are actually known. Their failure to memorize such things as the multiplication tables in their childhood, makes it impossible for them to understand whatever directly depends on such knowledge, which, in turn, makes it impossible for them to acquire the further knowledge that depends on that knowledge, and soon. With each passing year of their education, they fall further behind.

Ironically, their failure to memorize what it is appropriate to memorize ends up putting them in a position in which to pass examinations, they have no other means than out-of-context memorization—that is, memorization lacking any foundation in logical connection and proof. Because they have never memorized fundamental facts, and thus have no basis for developing genuine understanding of all that depends on those facts, they are placed in the position in which to pass examinations they must attempt to memorize out-of-context conclusions. It is because of this that a growing proportion of what they learn as the years pass has the status in their minds of arbitrary assertions. They are chronically in the mental state of having no good reason for most or almost all of what they believe. Thus, in their context of actual ignorance masked by pretended knowledge, they are prime targets for irrational skepticism. To them, in their mental state, doubt of everything can only seem perfectly natural.

Such students, such adults, are easy targets for a doctrine such as “environmentalism.” They are totally unprepared intellectually to resist any irrational trend and more than willing to leap on the bandwagon of one that caters to their uncertainties and fears. Environmentalism does this by blaming the stresses of their life on the existence of an industrial society and holding out the prospect of an intellectually undemanding and thus seemingly stress-free pastoral existence, one which is allegedly “in harmony with nature.”

The destructive work of contemporary education carried on against the development of students’ conceptual abilities from the earliest grades on is compounded, as their education advances to the higher grades, by the teaching of a whole collection of irrationalist doctrines that constitute the philosophical substance of contemporary liberal arts education... These doctrines constitute a systematic attack on reason and its role in human life...

If one wishes to use the expression “intellectual main stream,” and borrow for a moment the environmentalists’ alleged concern with the cleanliness of streams and such, these doctrines may justifiably be viewed as intellectual raw sewage comparable to what can be seen bobbing up and down in a dirty river. They and the methodology of contemporary education have totally fouled the “intellectual mainstream.” The kind of education I have described—-if it can still be called education, consisting as it does of an unremitting assault on the rational faculty and every rational value—-is responsible for the hordes of graduates turned out over the last decades who have had no conception of the meaning and value of the Constitution and history of the United States, of the meaning and value of Western civilization itself, or indeed of the meaning and value of membership in the human race. It has been responsible for the decline in the quality of government in the United States, as, unavoidably, many such mis-educated graduates have found their way into the halls of Congress and the state legislatures, and into major offices in all the other branches of government, and, of course, into all the various branches of the news media and publishing...

Thus, in what may prove to be the greatest tragedy in all of human existence, we see at the end of more than two centuries of man’s most dazzling success, the proliferation of heirs who as adults possess less than the mentalities of children. We see a culture of reason and science being transformed before our eyes into one which more and more resembles a culture of primitive men.

Such a transformation is not inevitable, but as long as the fundamental tenets of the miseducators remain largely unchallenged, it will continue.

Nortel (NYSE:NT) has disappointed investors again. Long term telcom equipment and Nortel investors must be getting used to the pain. So what does management do? Lets buy our way out of this mess. Nortel Networks is in takeover mode, CEO Mike Zafirovski has announced. Wall Street has been speculating for a while about the maker of telecommunications equipment.

Nortel who when riding high had acquired many a company using its own stock as currency. This option is not as attractive at the present time. The takeovers will need to be financed in cash. This will compete with internal organic opportunities. If too many internal projects get bumped then in house R&D will conclude "Whats the point" and Nortel will have to make acquisitions.

The sector is still staggering about not having recovered from its last boom. Many companies future's are openly questionable. If you had a neat little start up that was worthy of a lucrative buy out where would you make the deal.

I still think Motorola (NYSE:MOT) should buy out Nortel and hopefully kill two problem birds with one controversial deal.

IPO's For Private Equity & More Hedge Funds Coming

More and more discussions of IPO's for hedge funds and private equity firms are more forthcoming today. Blackstone, one of the largest private equity players in the US, may be coming public via an IPO. After some private equity IPO’s in the EU were less than wonderful, the rumors on this have been muted until recently. Also, the stock market drop muted some of the rumors and gossip in the arena recently.

CNBC’s David Faber was reporting more heated discussions on this in a segment around the market open and Faber said that Goldman Sachs is helping to draft the filings. This may be the first televised report but this certainly is not the first time such discussions have come up, and many such discussions were happening in late 2006 when private equity deals were flying left and right. Faber also noted that the market cap of such a deal would be valued at some $20 Billion or more. That figure is actually within the range we have heard, but frankly some of the street gossip may be more ‘guestimates’ than anything. The initial targets for a market cap were originally said to be in the $18 Billion to $25 Billion range. Apollo, KKR, and Carlyle were mentioned by Faber as potentially considering an IPO, but we have heard of many more that are also “considering” this strategy in recent weeks.

A private equity firm coming public poses a bit of a dual-dilemma. Private equity firms are able to do some of the investing that they do BECAUSE they are not public and because they do not often have to answer to thousands of investors and regulators. Many private equity managers also do not want their information and their data to become public information as well. But recent attempts to investigate private equity by various agencies may actually offer a bit of self-regulation before any strange laws or policies are forced upon them by regulators or by Congressional inquiries. So there is a heads and tails to this.

This follows the success of the IPO of Fortress (FIG-NYSE) in the hedge fund world with what is now a $10+ Billion market cap, and there are numerous rumors of others that want to come public as well. To avoid rumor mongering we are avoiding some of the ongoing rumor names out there in hedge fund land. With all of the regulatory changes they are dealing with, their hands are full enough without them having to deal with more rumors. Basically, if a hedge fund is in the top 20 in size there are rumors about them considering an IPO as another potential monetization on top of their fee structures. Also keep in mind that some of the largest hedge funds globally are basically subsidiaries of the large brokerage firms, so some of these will be hard to take public unless they want to venture into the tracking stock game again. Some of the large players in the brokerage firms that operate hedge funds or private equity are Goldman Sachs (GS-NYSE), Lehman (LEH-NYSE), Merrill Lynch (MER-NYSE), J.P.Morgan (JPM-NYSE) and others.

Around the same time that Fortress came public via its IPO, we actually gave a list of other public companies that operate either directly or indirectly in this field. So there are some companies that already public on the fringes of hedge funds and private equity. Some of these are Apollo Investment Corp (AINV-NASDAQ), American Capital Strategies (ACAS-NASDAQ), Allied Capital Corp (ALD-NYSE), and others. There is just too much money at stake and it may be a round of monetization in a group that is always looking for new inventive ways to make money.

Everyone Wants To Be Microsoft

After the EU took Microsoft (INTC) out back and beat it up over anti-trust charges and then a European court upheld the EU ruling and fines, it would seem no one would want to be in Redmond's shoes. The press is now full of articles about how Intel (INTC), Apple (AAPL), and Qualcomm (QCOM) might be the next Microsoft. Europe may look at their chips and iPods as tools of the monopolist.

Microsoft has become something of a corporate pariah.

That is unless one turns to the desktop. Eveyone still want to be Microsoft there. Google (GOOG) has started its Apps product, which has document, spreadsheet, and Powerpoint features. It hopes to take business from Microsoft Office which sold 71 million copies in the company's last fiscal year.

Now, IBM (IBM) wants to be Microsoft. According to The Wall Street Journal "IBM plans to post on the Internet a package of its own software with applications that square off against components of Microsoft's ubiquitous Office suite -- a word processor to rival Word, a spreadsheet to go up against Excel and business-presentation software as an alternative to PowerPoint."

The new IBM product is based on Open Office, which is what Google and Sun (SUNW) are already using for their desktop suites. Big Blue wants to offer the free stuff to promote its own Notes product which provides email and instant messaging. Microsoft pretty much put Notes out of business over a decade ago.

Office has been challenged before,band with software that was close to free, if not just simply free. Linux desktop software has been available for some time. But, the interest in applications like Lindows began to fall off a few years ago. The product may have cost little, but it was hard to use and did not work well with Windows, which most PCs already have. There is usually talk about using a Linux desktop for low cost computers for under-developed countries. It never seems to materialize.

But, there is a reason that the Chinese pirate Windows in huge numbers. They could have Linux for free and not face prosecution (and, in China, execution). Windows has more features, more functions, and it only costs a little over $100.

Everyone wants to be Microsoft because they would like to sell hundreds of millions of something that companies and people will pay $100 for.

But, for better or worse, you don't just get to be Microsoft overnight.

Cisco Buys Into Wireless Spectrum Analysis (CSCO)

Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Germantown, MD-based Cognio, Inc., a company involved in wireless spectrum analysis and management for wireless networks.

Cognio's spectrum technology enhances performance, reliability and security of wireless networks by detecting, classifying, locating and mitigating sources of radio frequency interference. The acquisition is said to provide Cisco with complementary and differentiating technology, intellectual property and a core team to expand Cisco's leadership in unified wireless networking.

The Cognio acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of Cisco's 2008 fiscal year, and this looks to be the company's 122nd acquisition. Upon the close of the acquisition, Cisco plans to integrate Cognio into its Wireless Networking Business Unit, under the Ethernet and Wireless Technology Group.

Financial terms were not disclosed as far as what Cisco is paying, nor ant financial backgrounder on Cognio. Cognio was venture-backed with Northbridge Venture partners, ABS Ventures, and Avansis Venture listed as backers.

Does 3Com's Report Justify Its Rally?

3Com (COMS) stock is performing well today, up over 10% at $4.89, after its earnings report that showed strong results from the Huawei partnership (H-3C) and announcing yet another restructuring (job cuts and facility closures). The company lost $0.01 on EPS before restructuring and other charges and posted revenues of $255.3M. The loss was -$0.04 after items, but the street was expecting -$0.04 EPS and $176.55M in revenues. Even with slightly under-street revenues, there was relief that the picture may be getting better.

This UBS analyst upgrade from Long Jiang lifting the rating from a Neutral up to a Buy is likely contributing to these excessive gains. Pre-market the stock was only up about 3%, but then after this upgrade the shares made a steady march to its 10%+ gains on the day. This is an interesting upgrade, and after reading the research note it looks more like a sum of the parts valuation (he says $6.40 value now) than a call that is endorsing the old legacy 3Com before Huawei. Without the additional analyst push this would probably not be as strong as it has been today. The FOMC decision hasn't yet posted and there has already been double the normal trading volume with 150 minutes until the close.

The Huawei partnership, H-3C, is now 51% owned by 3Com and is perhaps the only good thing going on there at the company. Since it is majority-owned by 3Com, they now get to count the revenues from the partnership since it is the majority holder. That is why the company had revenues grow 44% year-over-year. The company's job cuts are in the lagging Secure Converged Networking (SCN) segment, which saw a 6% drop in segment revenues. This shows there is still a steady erosion in the legacy 3Com business.

3Com ended the quarter with $864 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments (including the consolidated cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of H-3C which totaled $169 million).

The company believes the restructuring supports long-term profitability and long-term growth and will focus on reducing components of the SCN operating segment cost structure to achieve future profitability. It will close approximately 21 facilities around the world and cut 250 full-time employees (15 percent of its SCN headcount). It will also focus on its sales, marketing and services efforts and will record restructuring charges of approximately $10-$13 million. These charges are expected to be recorded principally during 3Com's first and second quarters of fiscal 2007 (the next 2 quarters). Shouldn't the focus have been this newer thought process all along? Machiavelli would say to instill all the changes in the village at once.

Scott Murray, 3Com's president and CEO, said, "I am pleased with the progress that we have made in the past quarter in moving 3Com toward a profitable business model. H-3C delivered strong results, and we have continued to reduce the operating loss of our SCN business through solid cost control.....We believe that the cost realignment announced today will be a significant part of achieving our goal of future profitability."

3Com has been a serial restructurer. It has restructured so many times you would compare it to a Motorola or Gateway of the old days, but we are not comparing these names and not even providing tickers on them to avoid distractions. To prove a point, we are talking about the company that spun-off Palm (PALM). The company had 3,900 employees at the end of March, 2003 and had thousands more back in the 1990's. What you have to wonder is how much of the Huawei JV sales are actually tied to or indirectly a result of the current SCN sector that is still spiralling downward. This is the hardest question to answer. If the answer is "Not Very Much" then why doesn't the company just jettison that whole segment? or why nottry to go find a buyer for it? It is a declining business. The reasons may be very clear.

Does this headcount reduce the dead weight? Will there be further dead weight they can trim? There has to be some. It looks like the Chairman (Benhamou) is paid $100,000 and is no longer well thought of on the street, even though he is no longer the face of the company. Under his watch they lost the data communications war with Cisco (CSCO) and others, went through restructuring after restructuring, lost Billions of dollars in market cap, and even spun-off Palm. maybe they could even try a name change to H-3C.

Will the old legal fight between Cicso (CSCO) and Huawei ever creep back up? Cisco was suing Huawei in 2003 because so much of the core router was reportedly identical in many cases down to the source code. This was resolved in July of 2004. Huawei agreed to make many surface and interface changes and to stop selling the products at issue and only sell new modified versions. So what prevents more look-alikes down the road, and what prevents Cisco from wanting to try to block 3COM's efforts as the H-3C joint venture starts to take more sales? Some in the US have referred to the H-3C routers as "the poor man's Cisco router without the support." If "the poor man's router" starts to take away too many sales from the rich man's salesforce what will prevent a re-initiation of this fight. It was resolved in 2004, but the verbage back at the time of the resolution just didn't feel the same as other resolutions between other companies. This is not predicting a legal issue will arise, but it is simply alerting that there is at least a remote possibility of it down the road. If it does, then who do you think has deeper pockets to fight it?

They carry almost no debt and the balance sheet is still manageable, but the core balance sheet has contracted through all the restructurings and through each stock-drop. The intent is not to just batter this company while it is trying to get up off the floor, but there are still issues. The stock is up 52% from the 52-week lows and up over 60% from the lows in the last 18-months. The stock would have probably been up on its own and with the market today, but it would appear that at least a large portion of the gains today are probably tied to this one influential upgrade from UBS.

Media Files Meta Info Identification

Lately I have setup a home pc for my parents and I have to install windows for them even I myself advocate open source, that's the platform my brother knows how to work with and he can help my parents in case there's technical problem as I'm about to move to new place.

I have installed Firefox browser, OpenOffice and Vlc media player for them. Since my parents prefer to watch movies, I have found a Open Source application that can help them to identify the media files and download the correct codec. You can find the application here -

Mediainfo is small application but very neat although it can't support all codecs yet, you can just load the media file and it will try to identify what kind of containers and media formats are embedded in the file and extract the useful meta information for you. Of course the most useful feature for end user should be the "mouse click" where you can fetch the correct codecs to solve the problem of playing media file.

HP Compaq nx6320: Ubuntu Linux

Just start working in the company and I got this laptop in the first day, after few days of using ultimate OS that produced by M$, I can't resist anymore due to low productivities, therefore ..... good bye M$.

Finally Ubuntu kicks into my life in for production work because .....

1. I'm lazy to configure anything manually

2. I need something that can create high productivities

3. I have no time

4. It works almost out of the box except suspend to memory which not my serious concern anyway

5. Mel aka Spoonfork burnt me the Ubuntu installation CD

For Ubuntu users, the laptop model is HP Compaq nx6320 and its weight around 2.8kg +. If you don't mind the weight and love big laptop with clear screen, this is definitely your choice, especially the battery can last 3++ hours or I should say around 4 hours.

Maybe next time I should try FreeBSD, OpenBSD or Gentoo but currently I'm quited pleased with the outcome and I'm on the road.

3Com 3226: Enable Port Mirroring

If you have 3Com Network Switch 3226 Model, and you would like to monitor your network, it does provide port mirroring feature. In order to enable it, you can login to the console via telnet, then execute commands accordingly to the screenshot below -

feature -> rovingAnalysis -> addremovestartstopsummary

3Com uses Roving Analysis as the term for the port mirroring, you will have to specify monitor port and analyzer port. Monitor port is the port you will want to monitor and analyzer port is the port to mirror traffic on monitor port. From my example I will monitor port 1 and its network traffic will be mirrored to the analyzer port which is port 25. Once I start monitoring, you can view the summary where roving analysis is enabled.

By now you can just plug in your IDS sensor or traffic collector to port 25 of the switch and start your network security monitoring.

respose where , he say ,is working for a fix and give
to me some code for look. Good !!

Every TCP package have 'flag bit’ defining content and intention of each package.

Example:

A package with flag bit contain "SYN or SYNCHRONIZE" will undertake to conduct initiation connection from sender to recipient. A package with flag bit contain "ACK" will undertake to inform receiver about sender information.
While a TCP package with beet flag contain "FIN" or "FINISH" undertaking to stop connection from sender to recipient.

To build a TCP connection, need data transfer package between two host, transfer of this data recognized by the name of "TCP Three-Way Handshake" as below picture.

Microsoft to Release Vista Fixes in 2008

Microsoft Corp. said it will release a major package of updates and fixes for the Windows Vista operating system in the first half of 2008.

The company said a ''beta'' test version of Service Pack 1 will be released ''in a few weeks to a moderate sized audience.'' The SP1 beta includes updates Microsoft has already made to the operating system it started selling to consumers at the end of January.

The service pack fixes some common problems that cause computers to crash or freeze, Microsoft said, including compatibility problems with some newer graphics cards, external monitors and printer drivers. Microsoft said it also fixed some problems users had with putting their PCs to sleep and waking them up again.

The company said SP1 is also expected to improve battery performance, increase the speed of copying files and help Internet Explorer run faster on Vista.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker said SP1 also brings several security improvements.

Microsoft said it expects to release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, Vista's predecessor, in the first half of 2008 as well, but in a statement added that it ''should not significantly change the Windows XP experience.''

In the past, some of Microsoft's business clients used the release of a service pack as a sign that a new operating system was stable enough to install. Analysts have said Vista seems more reliable out of the box than past versions of Windows, and that businesses need not wait for the service pack.

LG recently released their Xnote C1 tablet. Is it able to escape the problems that have plagued other players in this segment? Read on to find out...

LG as a brand-name is far better known in India for their white good products. Though they have marketed and released laptops in India earlier too, they have not been able to achieve any kind of success in this sphere. Hence coming into this review, I was a little bit curious and wary on the looks and performance of this new product.

Well my fears on the looks of the product were laid to rest quite quickly. The X1 is a 10.6 inch tablet and is surprisingly small and light. LG has opted to go with a plain white-black color combination for the Xnote. There is a strange color variation here though. The top lid of the tablet is piano-black with a smooth finish, while the area around the LCD Panel is a lighter matte finish and the keyboard area is plain glossy white. The whole effect gives the tablet a rather sober look and actually demeans the laptop - making it look less expensive than it is actually worth. Another irritating note here is that the top lid is a fingerprint magnet. Every little thumbprint shows up glaringly. In its defense however, LG has provided a cloth to clean the laptop. While this does solve the problem somewhat, a better selection of paint and a less reflective surface (like HP’s DV2000 series) would have been more appropriate. However once you get past this problem, the LG shines. The construction material used for the tablet is very sturdy. The hinges of the tablet are well secured and despite being flexed in every possible direction was free moving and without squeaks.

Nokia Launches 5 New Phones

Nokia is launching 5 new phones at their GoPlay event in London. They aren’t all new models to be precise, but a few are simply re-hashed and upgraded versions of older designs. We don’t have the information yet as to when they’ll be hitting our stores, but I can only hope soon, considering India is Nokia’s second largest market for their devices.

Nokia N95 8GB Edition

First off is the new version of their ‘Super-Phone’ the N95. This new model is totally black to begin with and now comes with a whopping 8GB of internal memory. It’s also going to have a 1200 mAh battery (950 mAh - original). Another major redesign feature is that the screen size has been upped to 2.8 inches (2.6 inches – original).

Nokia N81

The next Symbian smartphone from Nokia is the N81 which will have a 2.4 inch TFT display with QVGA resolution. It will also be equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities, is EDGE/HSDPA-enabled and will also support Bluetooth with A2DP compatibility as well. The N81 will also have dedicated gaming keys and 8GB of internal memory. The main camera is 2 megapixels and there’s also a secondary CIF camera for video calls.

Motorola RAZR2 features almost the same performance as Motorola RAZR2 V9. They are all rich with great clear colour screen and cool lookin for the on-screen touch controls. Anyway, there is some differences between them too (or esle they wouldn’t have the different name). V8 features a slick new interface thanks to a Linux/Java platform whereas V9 still contain the same boring Moto interface. Some messaging functions only available on the V8’s external display. For the memory storage, although V8 does not have expandable memory, it comes with 420 MB or 2 GB internal user memory while V9 only has 45MB of internal storage. Even though you don’t like its performance, the device’s slim 11.9mm body may catch your attention. And the last thing, don’t forget, V8 does not have 3G function as V9. It would have dissapointed some people. However, if you think in positve way, you might save a great amount of money since you won’t pay for any 3G connection fees.

One of my most vivid memories from a trip to the Magic Kingdom are Kodak's Picture Spot signs (this picture is someone else's). Wonder why there aren't more of those around the landmarks in tourist destinations. Our office is right next to the Trinity Church, a textbook tourist attraction in Boston. The Trees that Rewrote History

Back from a wonderful two weeks in the Eastern Sierras and the high country of Yosemite! My first stop on vacation was a day trip into the White Mountains of California, home of the "trees that rewrote history". This was a fascinating venture into the world of the Bristlecone Pine Forest and the science of dendrochronology. The Bristlecone Pine Forest in this region is home to the world's oldest known living tree which is 4,776 years old. However in this region deadwood has been dated to be as old as 11,400 years old and the scientific community is continuing to explore the deadwood. in this area. Any other place in the world wood 3,000 years old would be an incredible find but in this location it has to be at least 7,000 years old to create any ripple of excitement. The whole story of dendrochronology and the rangers explanation of the process of dating trees was captivating. It was amazing how low tech the procedure is and how much of the work like counting rings is done essentially by hand. I was also intrigued by the way that these trees have changed our understanding of history. The ranger, Christine, explained how through dendrochronology they have been able to date some of the Native American ruins by taking core sampling's from the wood used in the lintels. She also explained how the bristlecone helped to calibrate radio carbon dating and caused a shift in some of the dates assigned to historic events and locations like the great pyramids. I tried to record her talk as a podcast but I did not get a good quality audio. Therefore I have had to rely on bits an pieces to provided this abbreviated explanation. It was previously assumed that Radiocarbon was created at a constant rate and so by measuring the carbon present an object could be dated. With the discovery of the ancient bristlecone it was possible to count the rings and sample the level of radiocarbon present and thus calibrate the dating more accurately. Generally speaking it was discovered that in many instances radio carbon dating was too "young" and it was established that the level of radiocarbon created is not constant overtime but rather it is effected by a number of factors. Thus the bristlecone pines became known as the trees that rewrote history. Another part of all of this that appealed to me was the sense of dendrochronology as a puzzle waiting to be solved. The ranger spoke about how they establish a timeline and look for overlapping patterns to establish a fixed timeline. If you know the date of one sample you can count backwards to date the others. This is all explained and illustrated much more eloquently, as in this example at the right, on the website for the Ancient Bristlecone Pine. What a great opportunity to walk among these ancient trees and oh how painless learning is when we are choosing our path and involved in real work with others who are passionate about what they are doing. Truly both the ranger and scientist I spoke with were so passionate and animated that you were drawn into their world even if just for a short while.

Synapses are Firing: Technology Playground

We are fortunate to have weekly Faculty/ Curriculum meetings on Wednesdays from 1:00 pm to 3:30. This is time dedicated to collaboration, professional development and planning. This year in planning for this time I have structure a rotation of meeting topics that is repeated monthly: Technology playground, Curriculum, Student work, Assessment.

Yesterday was the first Technology Playground meeting and it was a great start to the year. Part of the idea is that there needs to be time to try new applications and to explore their application in the classroom. We focused on two “skills” to start the year and we split the staff into two groups. Jan, our tech wizard, worked with one and I worked with the other but the staff actually taught each other as they rotated through the two stations. One task yesterday was to make sure each teacher had ( and understood how to use) an iGoogle page which included at a minimum, Google reader, Google notebook, goggle docs, Google calendar and a bookmark widget for those things that did not have an RSS feed. The staff had 5 bookmarks* to start thier Google reader and we share a school master calendar and a few documents. One of the best things was the realization that igoogle could make life easier. They also saw, first hand, how valuable RSS could be. I have talked about RSS for a year now and tried to show how to use it but the beauty of iGoogle was that it brought everything into one place .

The other task was to register for Voicethread and learn how to use it. We are really excited abut this application and it will be something all of the teachers use at some point this year. In the lower grades it will be a wonderful opportunity for the students to explain their learning and develop their oral language skills. We are also considering using it as a way to connect some classrooms around the globe. Last year we started the photo-a-day for schools which was a lot of fun but hard to administer. Now we are wondering about a weekly voicethread as a window to connect schools.

Would you be interested? We are open to grades K to 8. in California the social studies standards for second grade include understanding the differences in locations and this would be a great way to help the students truly grasp this!

Thanks to voice thread, skype and Joyce, another piece of just-in-time learning that surfaced was an interest in Avatars. Each teacher is going to create one for use on their webpage and with voicethread.

Connectedness is Transformative

Web 2.0 in education is powerful on many levels. It opens the door to education outside of the box. It creates corridors and highways of learning that have not before been available. It requires new skills and thought processes. It promotes new sense of what it means to be a citizen of this planet. And it levels the field allowing for anyone to be a contributor and creator.. Konrad posted a very thoughtful commentary on this is mid- August with some great examples of moving beyond collaboration and into contribution. I admire his work and hope to move forward to embrace much of what he talks about..... however recognizing that we are all at various points in the process of redefining teaching and learning I am struck by the notion that connectedness is the portal of transformation.

School has been in session for 9 days now and during that time we have used skype in one capacity or another almost everyday. We have had 3 skypecasts, 2 with students and one for professional development ( with another one which we had to postpone because of connection problems). As part of the Thinwall Classroom several of us have had almost daily chats with Clarence. And starting a little later this week we will be skypecasting first grade for about and hour a day because one of our students will be out of school for six weeks with a badly broken leg.

Despite living in large metropolitan area it is easy to be incredibly insulated, isolated and myopic. Skype has opened a portal to the world and begun to break down the walls of our school and classrooms. It has created an openness and a transparency that would never have been possible 10years ago. It has expanded our students world view and that of our whole community. Skype also adds the human face-to-face element to our connectedness. This is powerful. I can feel the excitement and the energy on campus growing.

Watch out the walls are begin to fall and good things are coming …..because we have opened the connections…..

Improving Google's Social Network

Google already has a social network , but it's only popular in Brazil and India, doesn't have a Googlish interface and had a lot of security problems in the past. That's why last year Google sponsored a project at the Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute whose initial goal was to "rethink and reinvent online social networking".

"Directed to help improve the online community orkut, the project's scope was not to simply redesign the interface. Our team considered how online social networking could bring greater value to users, especially for ages above twenty. After initial brainstorming and research, we chose to focus on the effects of a new model for online social networking: a unified social network that, as a service, provides social data to many other applications."

The network, titled Socialstream, is able to "draw content from a variety of sources. Socialstream would be based on a unified social network (USN), a single network that provides social data to other sites as a service. A service model allows many social networks to be linked together, letting them share both content and the nature of the relationships of the people who use them."

This core feature will allow you to have accounts on more social networks, but centralize the information about your contacts in a single place. This also assumes that other social networks have an API and don't act like walled gardens, which is not the case right now. Socialstream used data from blogging and photo-sharing sites like Blogger, Flickr and Picasa Web Albums.

"Socialstream emphasizes improving social connections by making it more efficient to communicate with, share with, and view the social content of all the people in a user's online social network. Socialstream provides a compelling user experience because it aggregates content across many different networks so a user has a single location to discover new content and communicate. The goal of Socialstream is to present social information in a way that ties it to the person who posted the information, and not the site from which it came."

Like with any feed reader, you'll be informed when there's new data for a contact. The site also includes a Google Talk-like sidebar with all your contacts. "The contact list is a structured method of viewing updates, so if a user is interested in a particular person they can navigate directly."

When you create new content, you can post it to Socialstream or to any other participating social network. "Socialstream lowers barriers to sharing with different levels of sharing. Posts can be marked as favorites, and users can read their friends' favorites as a way to keep up with them. 'Post about' supports the idea of post conversations and trackbacks. Posts can also be sent directly to a contact or commented on."

It will be interesting to see if this project ever becomes orkut 2.0, a unified social network that lets you keep in touch no matter if they use Blogger, Wordpress, Twitter, Flickr, Picasa Web, YouTube, MySpace, Friendster, Facebook or other services.

Blu-ray, HD-DVD Managed Copy Nearing Reality

Final spec that allows legal copying of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs is on track for the end of the year.

Whither managed copy? In the early, posturing stages of the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD, proponents of the new high-definition discs heavily promoted a feature called managed copy, which promised to enable legal consumer copying of content from a Blu-ray or HD DVD disc to another device or disc. But the first high-def players released before managed copy was finalized, and discussion of the feature waned--until now.

Managed-copy proponents are once again bringing up the concept, raising hopes that it is closer to becoming reality. Representatives for the group behind the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) expect that the 1.0 version of AACS will be ready before the end of the year. "That's our goal," says Michael Ayers, spokesperson for the AACS Licensing Authority. "We think we're on a fairly good track."

Unfinished Spec

When the first high-definition players appeared last year, the respective coalitions used what was referred to as an "interim" version of AACS. Vendors were eager to release their players, but critical technical and licensing aspects of AACS were still not ready to go--most notably (but not limited to) the portion of the AACS spec that handled managed copy. So an interim spec that left out managed copy was created to bridge the gap. In March of last year, when the interim spec launched, insiders estimated the spec would be final a few months later.

Fast-forward to May 2007. "We're at the 0.93 version of the spec; it's not the final version. It's been taking a while to roll out," says Ayers. He notes that the ongoing attacks on AACS are delaying the eventual finalization of the spec. "It is disruptive to respond to the various attacks. It means we're putting aside finalizing the agreements and getting managed copy out."

As anticipated, says Ayers, "The final version will include things like managed copy--which will address the main thing that hackers claim they're interested in." Specifically, using the content you purchase on other devices.

More on Managed Copy

The concept of managed copy is not new; it has been part of AACS from the beginning. "All of the studios are interested in doing it," says Ayers. "The studios have been looking forward, and realize they need to meet this consumer need for flexibility in the use of their content, whether they're making a backup or putting something on their home media jukebox server platform or their car. [The studios] have bought into the idea of managed copy, but there had to be a demonstration that the managed-copy scheme was secure."

So why has it taken so long for managed copy to take shape? "The structure of managed copy, how it's technically going to work, what will the rules and conditions for the offer of a managed copy be--part of it is just understanding the rights in offering a managed copy, the rights a content owner may or may not have," explains Ayers. "Potentially, you could have a situation where somebody has the right to distribute on disc, but nothing else; or, the distribution rights are limited to a specific region or continent."

How studios will implement managed copy, and what business model will back it, remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Studios won't take a one-size-fits-all approach to managed copy. The options that studios will offer (x number of legal disc backups, x number of transfers to another device) and the cost for those options (transfers could be free or sold on a per-copy basis) will vary, even among titles distributed by the same studio.

It's too early to tell which of the first- and second-generation high-definition players will be able to handle managed copy. Any players that will do so will need a firmware update to add support for AACS.

The pool of possible contenders is small, limited to players with an Internet connection. All HD DVD players have an ethernet connection; on the Blu-ray side, Sony's PlayStation 3, Samsung's BD-P1200, and Pioneer's BDP-HD1 have ethernet ports.

"The concept is that managed copy will be authorized via an online transaction, so there would need to be an online connection in order to do that transaction," explains Ayers. "Some players already have ethernet on the back. Or," he postulates, "you could have a small add-on device that authorizes the transaction."

iPhone: The Unlock Heard 'Round the World

No one ever doubted that the iPhone would be unlocked. It was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to crack the armor that heretofore has kept iPhone users from popping in a SIM card other than the iPhone-specific one that AT&T Wireless supplies with every new iPhone.

It seems that the team of someones at iPhoneSimFree.com are the first to successfully pull off this feat. The group says it has unlocked the phone, and will be releasing its software for sale starting next week.

Unlocking the iPhone dramatically widens the phone's appeal. For one, it means that you won't be tied to AT&T Wireless' services and network; you can use whatever local GSM network operates best for your needs--and potentially save money while doing so. Once it's been unlocked, you can take the phone with you anywhere, and pop in the SIM card of choice. For me, that would mean sticking with T-Mobile, where I already have a family plan and a service I don't want to change. For others, that may mean inserting a SIM purchased locally while traveling in Italy.

While we haven't tried this unlock yet ourselves, technology blog Engadget has given it a try, and found that the unlock works as advertised. Notably, Engadget says that at the moment, the hack appears "restore-resistant"--meaning you won't have to re-hack your phone after you apply an iPhone update. This is key to the success of any iPhone unlock process; Apple appears well on its way towards having multiple iPhone updates over time, and each software update so far has managed to undo any existing hacks on the iPhone.

I'll be interested to see what the response will be from Apple and AT&T Wireless. Considering you still have to buy the iPhone with a two-year AT&T Wireless contract, I'm not clear on how much of an advantage the iPhone unlock will be to the average consumer. You'll still have to pay to get out of your AT&T contract--which in turn will raise your overall cost-of-ownership on the iPhone.

Another consideration--if you plan to use the iPhone's Internet access over the cellular network--you'll want to pay for an unlimited data plan. The iPhone's Safari browser delivers the real, graphical Internet--which translates into lots of megabytes of data being transferred via the network. If you don't have unlimited data access, I'd shudder to think about the overage charges.

Addendum: More iPhone unlocks are surfacing now. One is from Rochester Institute of Technology-bound teenager from New Jersey came up with this solution, as documented on his blog.

Great for Apple; not that great for AT&T. There will be two groups of users for this software.

First group - buy the iPhone, sign up with AT&T; unlock the phone and use other SIMs when it's cheaper than roaming with AT&T (abroad); neither Apple, nor AT&T can legally do anything about it.

Second group - buy the iPhone, activate it with fake activation software; then unlock and use SIM of your choice. This could create problems, since Apple would be able to refuse updating such a phone or providing support.

According to the recent rulemaking with respect to the DMCA, unlocking SIM lock on phones is perfectly legal. Very few people know about the locking features and its implications in the first place, let alone the legalities of it, though. This will be a very low profile issue for both Apple, and AT&T.

Some sales reps at brick-and-mortar retailers convince PC purchasers to buy unnecessary store-made backups.

When Ian Griffith of Queens, New York, purchased an HP notebook from a Circuit City store in Brooklyn earlier this year, the salesperson urged him to have the chain's in-store Fire Dog technicians create Windows XP recovery discs in case Griffith needed to reinstall the OS.

"I specifically asked if this was something I could do on my own," Griffith says, and the answer was no. The salesperson, Griffith says, insisted that there were only two ways to obtain such discs: have them made at the store for $30, or buy them from HP for nearly twice as much.

But the clerk's assertions simply aren't true. Recovery discs are fairly easy to make yourself. And if you don't want to take on the responsibility of burning your own, you can buy them from HP for half what Circuit City charges.

In the end, just before handing over his credit card at the cash register, Griffith called a tech-savvy friend, who told him he could make the backup discs himself.

Griffith is one of several computer buyers who contacted us and other Web sites to report having this experience when buying a PC from Best Buy or Circuit City. Like Griffith, all of them say that the stores' sales reps told them that they couldn't get backup installation discs except by paying the store about $30 for fresh copies or by paying twice as much to purchase them from the notebook's manufacturer. Both Best Buy and Circuit City deny having a policy of telling customers that they can't create recovery discs themselves.

Test Buy

To investigate these reports, we shopped for notebooks at Circuit City and Best Buy stores in the Boston and San Francisco areas.

In our informal tests we found that some Circuit City sales reps pushed hard for us to pay the extra $30 for store-made recovery discs, but all of them ultimately acknowledged we could make them ourselves. On the other hand, salespeople at three of the five Best Buy stores we visited told us that we couldn't make the discs ourselves and would need Best Buy's assistance. Our alternative, these sales reps said, was to buy them from the notebook manufacturers for even more--sometimes twice as much--as the store would charge.

At the Watertown, Massachusetts, Best Buy store we visited, the sales rep advised me to buy an Acer Aspire 5570 notebook and told me that the system did not come with backup discs; according to the rep, I would have to purchase them from Best Buy for $30 or I'd have to buy them directly from Acer for upward of $80. Two Best Buy clerks at the cash register confirmed this information.

Nevertheless, I waived the purchase of reinstallation discs when I bought the Acer notebook. Back at my office, I created restore discs on my own in about an hour, using a hard-drive partition created for that purpose. In fact, both a brochure and the user manual that accompanied the notebook recommended making backup discs before beginning regular use of the notebook. The process wasn't difficult; I spent most of the hour simply waiting for the DVDs to finish their automated burning.

ADSL yaygınlaşmaya başladıktan sonra notebook fiyatları gittikçe ucuzladı... Ardından da kablosuz modem satışları patladı. Artık kablosuz internet kullanıcılarının sayısı hiç de azımsanacak gibi değil. Ancak bu kullanıcıların birçoğu yeteri kadar güvenlik önlemi almıyor. Hatta bir kısmı kablosuz ağına şifre bile koymuyor. Kalabalık muhitlerde notebook`unuzu açıp etraftaki kablosuz ağları tarattırdığınızda mutlaka açıkta bir kablosuz ağ bulabiliyorsunuz. Bazı kişiler kablosuz ağına çok basit şifreler koyuyor ancak modeminin kontrol panel giriş şifresini olduğu gibi bırakıyor. Ev ve küçük ofislerde kablosuz internet ağlarını korumak için kullanılan en bilindik iki farklı şifreleme yöntemi vardır. WEP tekniği ve WPA tekniği...

WEP tekniğinde şifre 1`den 9`a kadar rakamlar ve A`dan F`ye kadar harflerden oluşur. Yani hexadecimal olarak yazılır. Kablosuz ağların kullanılmaya başladığı ilk döneminde ortaya çıkan bu teknik en zayıf şifreleme tekniğidir. Açıkları bilindiği için yerine WPA sistemi geliştirilmiştir. WPA sistemindeki şifrede her türlü karakter kullanılabilir ve kırılması daha zordur. Evet kırılması daha zordur ama yeteri kadar güçlü bir şifre kullanırsanız... şifreleme tekniklerinin dışında MAC adresine göre filtreleme yapmak da bir korunma yöntemi olarak sıkça kullanılır. Bu yöntemde router, Access point, PC gibi her ağ cihazının sahip olduğu ve dünyada bir eşi daha olmayan MAC adresinden faydalanılır. MAC adresi bir çeşit seri numarasıdır. Modemin ayarlarından, kablosuz ağa girişine izin verilen MAC adreslerini belirleyebilirsiniz. Bu sayede tanımadığınız bilgisayarların ağa girişini engellemiş olursunuz. Ama bu da çok basit şekilde aşılabilen bir yöntemdir, çünkü MAC adresi klonlanabilir. Bunun dışında RADIUS, RSN gibi kırılması çok daha zor olan güvenlik yöntemleri de kullanılır ancak bu yöntemlerin kullanımı sınırlıdır. Çünkü bu yöntemler ev ve küçük ofis kullanıcıları için uygulanamayacak kadar komplike çözümlerdir.

Yazının ilerleyen bölümlerinde bu güvenlik metotlarının nasıl kırıldığını okuyacaksınız. Ancak önce çok önemli bir uyarı yapmamız gerekiyor.

Bu yazıda anlatılan yöntemleri deneme ve geliştirme amaçlı olarak kendi ağınızda kullanabilir ve buna göre açıklarınızı tespit edip güvenlik önlemlerinizi artırabilirsiniz.

Diğer kablosuz ağlara izinsiz giriş yaptığınız takdirde yasalar karşısında suç işlemiş duruma düşersiniz. Bu yazıda anlatılan yöntemleri uyguladığınızda mutlaka giriş yapılan modem/router bu girişi tespit edecek ve kayıt altına alacaktır. Bu kayıtlar gerektiğinde delil olarak kullanılabilir. Bu yazının amacı, yeterli derecede güvenlik önlemi olmayan kablosuz ağların ne kadar kolay kırılabildiğini ispatlamaktır. Ayrıca bu yöntemleri denerken sisteminizde herhangi bir problem meydana gelirse, sorumluluk size aittir.

Ayrıca şunu da belirtelim ki, birçok nedenden dolayı burada anlattığımız yöntemleri birebir uygulayamama ihtimaliniz de var. Böyle bir durumla karşılaştığınızda konu çok derin olduğundan derin bir araştırmaya girmeniz gerekebilir. Biz yazımızda bu kompleks konuyu mümkün olduğunca basite indirgeyerek anlatmaya çalışacağız. Mantığını kavradıktan sonra geliştirmek size kalmış.

Bu uyarıları yaptıktan sonra yavaş yavaş kolları sıvama zamanı geldi demektir. Öncelikle alet çantamızda neler var, bir bakalım: Kablosuz ağları kırmak için pek çok farklı araç kullanılabilir. Ama biz BackTrack isimli Linux canlı CD`sinden faydalanacağız. BackTrack`i kullanıyoruz çünkü bu CD`de kullanacağımız bütün araçlar, bir arada bulunuyor. Eğer isterseniz bu yazıda adı geçen araçların Windows sürümlerini de bulabilirsiniz. Ama baştan söyleyelim; Windows araçları Linux`taki kadar güvenilir çalışmıyor.

İhtiyacınız Olan Tek Yazılım: BackTrack

BackTrack adlı Slackware tabanlı Linux sürümünün içinde kablosuz ağların şifreleri ile ilgili bütün araçlar bir arada bulunuyor. Ayrıca bir canlı CD olduğu için bu işlemleri yaparken bilgisayarınıza herhangi bir şey kurmak zorunda kalmıyorsunuz. Kısacası; kablosuz ağları kırmak için ihtiyacınız olan tek şey: BackTrack. Dergimizin bu ayki DVD`sinde ISO biçiminde bulabileceğiniz BackTrack`i öncelikle bir CD`ye yazdırmanız gerekecek. ISO kalıbını CD`ye yazdırmak konusunda bilgisi olmayanlar `ISO`yu CD`ye Yazmak` başlıklı kutudan faydalanabilirler.

Eğer BackTrack`i CD`ye yazdırdıysanız bir sonraki adıma geçebiliriz.

BackTrack`le Tanışma

BackTrack`i CD`ye yazdırıp, bu CD ile bilgisayarınızı yeniden başlattığınızda bir kaç saniye sonra sistem açılacaktır. Siyah ekranda slax login: yazısını gördüğünüzde root yazın. Hemen ardından da şifre olarak toor yazacaksınız. Biraz sonra "Slax:" yazısını gördüğünüzde startx komutunu verin ve grafik arayüzün başlamasını sağlayın. Artık BackTrack`in masaüstünü karşınızda görüyor olmanız lazım. Eğer daha önce hiç Linux sürümü kullanmadıysanız, birkaç dakikanızı BackTrack`in menülerini kurcalamakla geçirebilirsiniz. Bu arada yine ilk kez Linux kullananlar, `Sistemi Özelleştirme` başlıklı kutuya bir göz atabilirler.

Biz yazımızda genel olarak BackTrack`in içerisindeki Wireless Tools (Kablosuz Araçlarını) kullanacağız. Bu araçlara ulaşmak için ekranın en alt sol bölümünde yer alan Başlat menüsünün muadili KDE menüsünden Wireless Tools ve Cracking yolunu izlemelisiniz. Sabredin, birkaç satır sonra tüm bu araçların nasıl kullanılacağını anlatacağız.

Ama daha önce donanımınızın BackTrack sistemiyle ile uyumlu olup olmadığını araştırmak gerekiyor.

Dinleme Modu

Kablosuz ağlarla ilgili yapılacak her işlem "dinleme" ile başlar. Yani havada dolaşan kablosuz sinyalleri yakalamak... Eğer kullandığınız kablosuz ağ cihazı (PCI, USB ya da PCMCIA olabilir) dinleme moduna destek vermiyorsa hiçbir şey yapamazsınız. Ayrıca kablosuz ağ cihazınızın sürücülerinin BackTrack`in içerisinde yüklü olması gerekir. BackTrack CD`sini takıp, bilgisayarınızı yeniden başlattıktan sonra, ilk iş olarak BackTrack`in kablosuz ağ arabiriminizi tanıyıp tanımadığını kontrol etmelisiniz. Bunun için Airmon Script aracını kullanacağız. (Bu araca ulaşmak için KDE menüsünden Wireless Tools > Cracking > Air Crack > Airmon yolunu izlemelisiniz.)

Airmon`u çalıştırdığınızda aşağıdaki gibi bir pencere ile karşılaşacaksınız.

Resimde gördüğünüz gibi bizim kullandığımız makinede eth0 arabirimini kullanan Centrino b/g model bir kablosuz ağ kartı bulunuyor. Bu kart ipw2200 sürücüsünü kullanıyor. Buradaki eth0 arabirimi bizim için özellikle önemli. Çünkü her aşamada bu arabirimi kullanacağız. Sizin cihazınız eth1, wlan0 gibi bir başka arabirimi kullanıyor olabilir.

Bizim yazımızda et0 olarak geçen tüm ifadelerin yerlerine siz kendi arabiriminizi yazmalısınız.

Eğer ki herhangi bir kablosuz ağ sürücüsü bulunamazsa sisteminiz kablosuz ağlara bağlanamayacağından, yazımızdaki uygulamaları gerçekleştiremezsiniz. Ancak bu noktada da çaresiz değilsiniz. İnternette küçük bir aramayla kullandığınız ağ aracına uygun Linux sürücülerini bulabilirsiniz. Ancak kullandığınız araç Broadcom chipset`i taşıyorsa işiniz oldukça zor. Öncelikle BackTrack`in kullandığı Linux çekirdeğini güncelleyip, Broadcom desteğini kernel modülü olarak yüklemeniz gerekiyor. Bu işlemi BackTrack`i sabit diskinize kurmadan yapamayacağınızı da hemen belirtelim. Bunun dışında BackTrack`in temeli olan Slackware ve Slax Linux dağıtımlarının paket depolarını gezerek derlenmiş driver, kernel ve diğer yazılımları kolayca bulabilirsiniz (BackTrack canlı dağıtımına yazılım ya da sürücü kurabilirsiniz. Bu işlemler için sistemi kurmanıza gerek yoktur.) Bunun için öncelikle http://www.slax.org/ adresindeki `modules` sayfasına bakmanızı öneririz.

Artık her şeyimiz hazır. Biz, PC World`ün kablosuz internet ağını kırmak için hazırız.

Yazının başında da bahsetmiştik. Ev ve ofislerde 3 çeşit güvenlik yöntemi kullanılır. WPA şifreleme, WEP şifreleme ve MAC adres koruması. Biz denemelerimize kırılması en basit olandan başladık: MAC adres koruması...

1. MAC ADRES KORUMASINI AŞMAK

Windows`ta kablosuz ağları arattırdığınızda karşınıza çıkan bazı ağlar "güvensiz" olarak gözükür ama ağa bağlanmak istediğinizde bir türlü başarılı olamazsınız. Çünkü router görevi gören modem sadece, daha önce tanımlanmış olan MAC adreslere sahip cihazlara izin verir. Bunun dışında kalan "yabancı" cihazların veri akışını engeller. Sizin cihazınız da izinli bir MAC adrese sahip olmadığından şifresiz ağa giriş yaparsınız ama hiçbir veri akışına katılamazsınız. Bu durumu çözmek için çok basit bir yöntem var. İzinli olan MAC adreslerden birini öğrenip, bu adresi klonlamak. Yani bilgisayarınızın MAC adresini değiştirmek...

Bunun için öncelikle izinli olan bir MAC adres bulmalısınız. Bunu yapmak hiç de düşündüğünüz kadar zor değil.

Hedef Erişim Noktasını ve Kanalı Belirleme

Klonlayacağımız MAC adresini belirlemek için İlk olarak Kismet isimli programı kullanacağız. Backtrack`in KDE menüsünden Backtrack > Wireless Tools > Analyzer yolunu izleyerek Kismet isimli programı çalıştırın. Kismet aslında menzilinizdeki tüm kablosuz ağlar üzerinden geçen bilgileri yakalayıp kaydeden bir program. Bu yüzden Kismet`i ilk açtığınızda, program size yakaladığı bilgileri nereye kaydedeceğini soracak. Masaüstü ya da herhangi başka bir yeri seçip devam tuşuna basabilirsiniz. Ardından bir siren sesiyle Kismet`in arabirimiyle karşılaşacaksınız. Bizim yaptığımız denemede ofisimizin yakınında birçok ağ çıktı. Bizim hedefimiz ise "pcworld" isimli modeme girebilmekti. Resim 1`de gördüğünüz gibi pcworld isimli kablosuz ağ 5. kanaldan yayın yapıyor. İstediğimiz ilk bilgiyi almış olduk. Kismet`i kapatıp 5. kanalı daha yakından izlemeye çalışalım.

İzinli Bir MAC Adresi Bulmak

5. kanalı daha yakından takip etmek için Airodump isimli uygulamayı kullanıyoruz. Bunun için KDE menüsünden Backtrack > Wireless Tools > Cracking > Aircrack yolundan Airodump uygulamasını çalıştırıyoruz. Açılan konsolda aşağıdaki komutu yazmamız gerekiyor.

airodump-ng --channel 5 --write dosya eth0

Bu komutta yapmak istediğimiz işlem şu: 5. kanaldaki yayınları eth0 arabirimindeki kablosuz ağ cihazı ile yakalayıp yakalanan verileri `dosya` ismiyle kaydettiriyoruz.

Burada lütfen yazdığımız komuttaki parametrelere dikkat edin. Aynı denemeyi siz yapacaksanız, kullanacağınız kanal ve arabirim (eth0) farklı olacaktır. Bizim test sistemimizde eth0 kablosuz ağ kartı, eth1 ise ethernet kartına denk geliyor. Siz sisteminizde wlan0 wlan1 gibi isimler kullanmak zorunda kalabilirsiniz. Şimdi dinlemeye başlıyoruz. Bir kaç saniye beklediğinizde ağa bağlı cihazlar tek tek dökülmeye başlayacak.

Resim 2`de gördüğümüz ilk üç cihaz doğrudan kablosuz modeme bağlanmış durumda. Diğer dördüncü bilgisayarın ise muhtemelen kablosuz ağ adaptörü açık ama herhangi bir modeme bağlı değil. Büyük ihtimalle listedeki ilk 3 MAC adresinin modemden izni var. Bu yüzden bu MAC adresleri klonlayarak bu modeme erişim sağlayabileceğimizi düşünüyoruz. Şimdi buradaki ilk üç MAC adresini bir kenara yazıyoruz.

Şimdi CD`yi çıkartıp yeniden Windows`a dönme zamanı geldi. Windows`ta MAC adresimizi değiştirmeyi deneyeceğiz. Bazı kablosuz ağ kartları MAC adresinizi doğrudan değiştirmenize izin veriyor. Eğer siz de bu kartlardan birini kullanıyorsanız işiniz çok kolay. Masaüstündeki Ağ Bağlantılarım`a sağ tıklayıp Özellikler menüsünü seçin. Açılan pencerede Kablosuz Ağ Bağlantısı`na sağ tıklayıp bir kez daha özellikleri seçin. Yapılandır butonuna basın ve Gelişmiş sekmesine geçin. Listede `Mac Adresi` gibi bir seçenek olması gerekiyor. Buradan Değer kısmına not ettiğimiz MAC adreslerinden birini giriyoruz.

OK tuşuna bastığınızda artık MAC adresinizin değişmiş olması lazım. Artık MAC adres filtreleme metoduyla güvenlik sağlamaya çalışan pcworld ağına bağlanabiliriz. Eğer sizin ağ kartınız Mac adresini değiştirmenize izin vermiyorsa sorun değil. MAC adresini değiştiren birçok program bulabilirsiniz. Ama bu programlar deneme sürümlerinde MAC adresini rast gele değiştirir. Yani sizin istediğiniz MAC adresini girmenize izin vermez. Bu yüzden de eğer parasını verip programı satın almayacaksanız, aynı işlemi kayıt defteri üzerinden de yapabilirsiniz.

Kayıt Defterinden Mac Adresini Değiştirmek

Bu işleme başlamadan önce kayıt defterinizin yedeğini almayı unutmayın. Eğer yanlış bir işlem yaparsanız sisteminiz zarar görebilir.

MAC adresini değiştirmek için önce Başlat menüsünden Çalıştır`a gelin ve `cmd` yazarak komut satırına geçin. Kablosuz ağ adaptörünüz takılı ve çalışır durumdaysa şu komutu yazın: net config rdr

şimdi Resim 3`teki gibi bir ekran görüyor olmalısınız. Bu ekranda gördüğünüz ayraçlar içindeki uzunca bölüm GUID (Globally Unique ID) numarasıdır.

Hemen onun yanındaki ise MAC adresiniz...

GUID numarasını bir kenara not edin. Başlat menüsünden Çalıştır`a gelip regedt32 yazın. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ yolunu izleyin ve bu yolun sonunda kendi GUID numaranızı bulun. Alt alta 0000,0001 gibi klasörlerle karşılaşacaksınız. Bu klasörlere tıklayarak AdapterModel kısmında Wireless adaptörünüzü bulmaya çalısın. Doğru klasörü bulduğunuzda alt satırlardan NetworkAdress kısmı karşınıza çıkacaktır. Burada yapmanız gereken, MAC adresinizi istediğiniz başka bir adresle değiştirmek.

Aslında MAC adres korumalı bir ağa girmek için ihtiyacınız olan bilgileri Windows altında çalışan NetStumbler isimli programla da elde edebilirdiniz. Ancak biz WEP ve WPA şifrelerini de kırarken BackTrack`i kullanacağımız için konuyu dağıtmamak adına NetStumbler`i işe karıştırmadık.

2. WEP ŞİFRELERİNİ KIRMAK

WEP şifreleri 10 hanelidir ve içinde sadece A`dan F`ye kadar harfler ve 0`dan 9`a kadar rakamlar bulunur. Bu yüzden de kombinasyon sayısı sınırlıdır. Yani kırılması daha kolaydır.

Günümüzde bu şifreleme yetersiz kaldığından daha güvenli olan WPA şifreleme yöntemi geliştirilmiştir. WEP`in hala kullanılıyor olmasının nedeni ise kısmen geriye dönük uyumluluk, kısmen kablosuz dağıtım sistemini desteklemesidir.

WEP yönteminin nasıl kırıldığına geçmeden önce basit bir şekilde WEP yönteminin nasıl işlediğinden bahsedelim. WEP yönteminde kablosuz ağ dağıtıcısı, modem ya da router kendine bir istek geldiğinde rastgele 128 bit`lik bir metin oluşturup kablosuz bağlantıyı yapacak cihaza (notebook, PDA vs) gönderir. Cihaz kendisindeki WEP şifresi ile bu gelen manasız metni şifreler ve geri gönderir. Modem kendisine gelen şifreli metnin doğru şifrelenip şifrelenmediğine bakarak bağlantıyı onaylar ya da reddeder. Bu arada bağlantıyı dinleyen bir kişi rast gele seçilen 128 bit`lik veriyi ve daha sonra bu verinin şifrelenmiş halini yakalayabilir. Ama WEP ile şifrelenmiş verilerin içerisinde Intialization Vector (IV) denen datalar kullanılır. Bu IV dataları her pakette değişir. Yani modem üzerinde ne kadar çok trafik varsa o kadar çok IV vardır. IV dataları, paket içerisinde şifrelenmez çünkü bu datalar tekrar açılırken bu IV`ler kullanılacaktır. IV`lerin amacı aynı metnin iki kez geçilmesi durumunda farklı şifrelenmiş datalar oluşmasını engellemektir. IV dataları 24 bit uzunluğundadır. Bu yüzden 64 bit WEP ile şifrelenmiş bir data aslında 40 bit`tir. Çünkü 24 bit IV`den oluşmaktadır. 24 bit kısa bir dizi olduğundan trafik arttıkça IV`ler tekrara girebilir. İşte WEP`in kırılma fikrinin ana teması da buradan ortaya çıkıyor. Amaç tekrar eden IV`leri yakalamak. Tabii işin mantığı bu kadar kolay değil. Ama olayın pratikteki kullanımını anlatabilmek için şimdilik bu kadarı yeterli.

Hedefi Tespit Etmek

Şimdi amacımız pcworld kablosuz ağına davetsiz olarak misafir olarak girmek ve yüksek hızda internet bağlantısına erişebilmek. Bunun için öncelikle pcworld ağı hakkında bilgi alacağız. Sonra bu ağdaki şifreli paketlerden toplayabildiğimiz kadar toplayacağız ve son olarak da şifreyi kırmayı deneyeceğiz.

İlk olarak yeniden Kismet isimli programı çalıştırıyoruz. (KDE menüsü Backtrack > Wireless Tools > Analyzer > Kismet). Kismet açıldıktan kısa bir süre sonra pcworld ağını görüyoruz. Resim 4`te pcworld isimli modemin 5. kanaldan yayın yaptığını tespit ediyoruz. Bu arada Kismet ile SSID`sini gizlemiş olan kablosuz ağları da belirleyebiliyoruz. Zaten Kismet`in en büyük avantajı gizli SSID`leri de tespit edebilmesi. Artık ilk aşamayı tamamladık. Hedefimizdeki modem belli, modemin hangi kanaldan yayın yaptığı belli...

Paket Toplama

Şimdi WEP şifresinin kırabilmek için Airodump isimli program ile biraz paket yakalayacağız. Airodump`i başlatmak için KDE menüsü > Backtrack > Wireless Tools > Cracking > Air Crack > Airodump yolunu izliyoruz. Şimdi beşinci kanaldaki paketleri toplayacağız. Bunun için aşağıdaki komutu yazıyoruz.

airodump-ng --channel 5 --write yakalanan_veri --ivs eth0

Bu komut şu anlama geliyor: Beşinci kanaldan gelen tüm verileri eth0 cihazını kullanarak (kablosuz ağ kartı) yakala. Yakalanan veri içerisindeki IV`leri ayıkla. Ayıklanmış veriyi yakalanan_veri isimli bir dosya oluşturarak içine kaydet.

Şifreyi çözebilmek için sadece IV`leri yakalamamız yeterli. Geri kalanı işimize yaramayacak. Daha önce de belirttiğimiz gibi amaç daha fazla IV yakalamak.

Airodump komutunu verdikten sonra aşağıdaki gibi bir görüntüyle karşılaşıyoruz.

Peki, ne kadar IV yakalamamız gerekiyorş 64 bit WEP şifresini kırmak için 40.000 kadar... 128 bit şifre için bu rakam 700.000`e kadar çıkıyor. Eğer dinlediğiniz modem üzerinde yeteri kadar trafik yoksa bu kadar IV`yi yakalamak saatler sürebilir. Bu yüzden kendimiz biraz trafik yaratıp, IV yakalama işini hızlandırabiliriz. Bunun için Aireplay programını kullanacağız.

Trafiği Hızlandırmak

Airodump isimli program yakaladığı verileri kaydederken bir başka pencerede Aireplay isimli programı çalıştıracağız. Eğer modeme bağlı kullanıcılar varsa, daha doğrusu modemin üzerinde trafik varsa, var olan trafiği maniple ederek daha da çoğaltmak için aşağıdaki komutu kullanacağız. Dikkat edin; bu komutun işe yaraması için modeme bağlı en az bir kullanıcının olması gerekiyor.

aireplay-ng --arpreplay -b 00:11:F5:8E:B7:83 -h 00:13:02:0C:97:E7 eth0

Burada yaptığımız işlem çok basit. Bir kullanıcının modeme gönderdiği isteklerin aynısını modeme bir kez daha gönderiyoruz. (Fakat unutmayın ki yukarıda yazdığımız adresler bizim ağımızdaki MAC adresler. (b) kısmında yazdığımız adres, pcworld modeminin adresi. (h) kısmında yazdığımız adres ise modeme bağlı herhangi bir kullanıcının adresi.)

Aireplay ile trafik yaratıp daha çok IV toplamaya çalışıyoruz. Eğer modem üzerinde yeteri kadar trafik varsa bunu yapmaya bile gerek yok. Biraz sabırla bu aşamayı geçebilirsiniz. Ama en büyük sorun modeme bağlı hiçbir kullanıcının olmaması. O zaman işimiz daha zor. Bu hiç IV yakalayamayacağımız anlamına geliyor. Böyle bir durumda Fake Authentication atağını uygulamamız gerekirdi. Bunun için uydurma bir MAC adresiyle --fakeauth atağı yaparak yukarıdaki komutu bir kez daha tekrarlamak gerekir. Şimdi bir yandan trafiği artırıyoruz, bir yandan da bu trafiği yakalanan_veri isimli bir dosyaya kaydediyoruz.

Biraz Sabır

Paket toplama işleminde biraz sabır gerekir. Eğer çok vaktiniz varsa sorun yok. Airodump`ı çalıştırın ve bırakın. Bir gün boyunca toplayabildiği kadar paket toplasın.

Yeteri kadar paket topladığınızı düşünüyorsanız (#Data kısmında en az 50.000 paket görmelisiniz) şifre kırma denemelerimize geçebiliriz.

Bunun için Aircrack isimli programı açıyoruz. Bu arada arkadaki programların çalışmaya devam etmesinin herhangi bir mahsuru yok.

Aircrack`te aşağıdaki komutu veriyoruz.

aircrack-ng -a 1 -b 00:11:F5:8E:B7:83 yakalanan_veri-01.ivs

Komutun içerisindeki -a 1 parametresi şifrenin WEP olduğunu tanımlıyor. Bir sonraki bölümde -a 2 parametresini WPA şifresi için kullanacağız. -b kısmı ise saldırının yapılacağı modemin BSSID`sini tanımlıyor. Buradaki BSSID numarası elbette ki bizim modemimize ait. Bu ID`yi siz kendinize göre değiştireceksiniz.

Son Aşama

Aircrack programı yukarıdaki komut ile yakalanan IV`leri taramaya başlayacaktır. Bunu yaparken yakalanan_veri.ivs isimli dosyadaki IV`leri tarayacak. Dikkatli olun; program, sizin yazdığınız dosya adının sonuna -01 ekliyor. Eğer aynı komutu birden fazla kez tekrarlarsınız aynı dosyanın üzerine yazmıyor, sonuna yaptığı eklentiyi -02, -03 şeklinde devam ettiriyor. Eğer ilk denemenizde başarısız olursanız biraz daha bekleyip, Airodump`in daha fazla IV yakalamasına izin verin. Biraz daha IV toplandıktan sonra Aircrack komutunu yeniden kullanarak bir deneme daha yapabilirsiniz. Bu arada şifreyi çözene kadar Airodump isimli programı kapatmayın ki, veri yakalama işlemi kesintisiz devam etsin. Bizim yaptığımız denemede yeteri kadar IV topladıktan sonra 2-3 dakika içinde 64 bit WEP şifresi çözüldü. 128 bit WEP şifresi kullanılsaydı o zaman iki kat kadar daha fazla IV toplamamız gerekecekti. Ama sonuç olarak WEP şifresinin çözülmeme ihtimali düşük. Tabii ki istisnai durumlar oluştuğunda denemeleriniz başarısız olabilir.

3. WPA ŞİFRESİNİ ÇÖZMEK

Eğer yazının burasına kadar eksiksiz okuduysanız WEP şifresine ve MAC adres korumasına asla güvenmemeniz gerektiğini anlamış olmalısınız. Geriye tek bir yöntem kalıyor. O da WPA şifrelemesi...

WPA şifresini kırmak pratikte biraz daha zor. En basitinden WPA şifresi, WEP gibi sınırlı bir kombinasyona sahip değil. Aklınıza gelen her karakteri WPA şifresinde kullanabilirsiniz. şifrenin uzunluğu da standart değil. Ayrıca şifreleme yönteminde WEP`teki gibi yakalayacağımız IV`ler de bulunmuyor. Bu yüzden WPA şifresini kırmak çok da kolay değil. Ama eğer kullanılan WPA şifresi "abcd1234" gibi basit bir diziyse, kırma işlemi sadece 10-15 dakika kadar sürede tamamlanabilir. şifrede güçlü bir kombinasyon kullanılmışsa kırma işlemi gerçekten çok güç olabilir.

İşlemlere geçmeden önce teoride ne yapacağımızı anlatalım. Önce her zaman olduğu gibi kıracağımız kablosuz ağı belirleyip, kanal bilgisini ve BSSID`sini bulacağız. Daha sonra bu ağdaki trafiği dinleyerek, şifreli paketleri kaydedeceğiz. Ardından bu paketlerin içerisinden bir "handshake" yakalamaya çalışacağız. Handshake olarak tabir ettiğimiz, herhangi bir kullanıcının WPA şifresini kullanarak ağa dahil olması, yani ağa kabul edilmesidir. Eğer siz ağı dinlediğiniz sırada bir kaç kullanıcı ağa giriş yaparsa şansınız var demektir. Bu sırada handshake yakalamanız çok daha kolay. Ya da kendimiz bir handshake yaratmak için Deauthentication atağı yapmayı deneyeceğiz. Bu atak yönteminde en basit anlatımıyla ağa bağlı olan kullanıcıyı ağdan düşürmeye çalışacağız ki, o yeniden bağlanmaya çalışırken biz bir handshake yakalayalım. İşin buraya kadar olan kısmında imkansız yok. Günler boyu ağı dinleyerek sonunda handshake yakalayabilirsiniz. Ancak bundan sonrası biraz tesadüflere bağlı. Elimizdeki sözlük listesini kullanarak ağa kaba kuvvet atağı uygulayacağız. Eğer karşımızda basit bir şifre varsa şansımız yerinde demektir. Ancak güçlü bir şifreyi hiç çözemeyebilirsiniz.

Ve pratikte WPA şifresini kırmak için faaliyete başlıyoruz. Bu iş için belli bir yere kadar WEP şifresinde kullandığımız işlemlerin aynısını gerçekleştireceğiz. Önce Kismet`i çalıştırıp, kırmayı deneyeceğimiz ağı tespit edeceğiz. Ardından tespit ettiğimiz kablosuz ağ modeminin kanalını dinleyip, veri trafiğini kaydetmeye başlayacağız. Bunun için yine Airodump programını kullanacağız. Ancak parametrelerde biraz farklılıklar olacak. Bizim modemimiz 5. kanala ayarlı olduğu için Airodump programını açıp, aşağıdaki komutu yazıyoruz:

airodump-ng --channel 5 --write yakalanan_veri_wpa eth0

Şimdi 5. kanaldaki tüm şifreli veriler `yakalanan_veri_wpa` isimli bir dosyanın içine yazılıyor. Bu aşamada bir şekilde modeme bağlanan bir kullanıcı yakalamaya çalışacağız. Bunun için Deauthentication atağı yapmamız gerekiyor. Önce kablosuz modeme bağlı bir kullanıcıyı seçiyoruz. Şimdi bu kullanıcı ile modeme Deauthentication atağı yapmak için Aireplay`i çalıştırıyoruz. Airodump programı arkada veri yakalamaya devam ederken, Aireplay`de aşağıdaki komutu veriyoruz.

aireplay-ng --deauth 5 -a 00:11:F5:8E:B7:83 -c 00:13:D3:78:E2:AD eth0

Bu komutta 5. kanaldaki 00:11:F5:8E:B7:83 BSSID`li modemimizle, bu modeme bağlı olan bir bilgisayarı kullanarak Deauthentication atağını yapıyoruz. Şimdi bakalım hiç handshake yakalayabilmişmiyizş

Arkada Airodump çalışmaya devam ederken biz WPA kırma işlemi için sona yaklaşıyoruz. Son adıma geçmeden önce şifreyi kırmak için kaba kuvvet saldırısında kullanacağımız kelime listesini hazırlamalıyız.

Kaba Kuvvet Atağı İçin Kelime Listesi

BackTrack`in içerisinde çeşitli kelime ve rakam kombinasyonlarından oluşan bir kelime listesi var. Bu liste sıkıştırılmış durumda olduğu için öncelikle listeyi açmamız lazım. En altta soldan ikinci sıradaki butona tıklayarak yeni bir Shell penceresi açıyoruz. Aşağıdaki komutu giriyoruz.

ark --extract /pentest/password/dictionaries/wordlist.txt.Z

Şimdi bir pencere çıkacak ve size dosyayı nereye açmak istediğinizi soracak. Eğer hiçbir şeye dokunmadan OK tuşuna basarsanız wordlist isimli dosya doğrudan root klasörüne kaydedilecek. Burada kalmasının bir mahsuru yok.

Artık sona yaklaştık. Aircrack aracıyla ilk denememizi yapıyoruz. Aircrack aracını açıp aşağıdaki komutu giriyoruz:

-aircrack-ng -a 2 -b 00:11:F5:8E:B7:83 yakalanan_veri_wpa-01.cap -w wordlist.txt

Bu komutun parametreleri şöyle:

-a 2: WPA atağı

-b: hedef seçilen modem

yakalanan_veri_wpa-01.cap: Airodump`ın yakaladığı şifreli veriler

-w wordlist.txt: kaba kuvvet atağında kullanılacak kelime listesi

Eğer şansınız yerindeyse birkaç handshake yakalamış olursunuz ve Aircrack, wordlist.txt içindeki kelimeleri tek tek deneyerek şifreyi çözmeye çalışır. Ancak şansınız yerinde değilse `No valid WPA handshakes found` mesajı alırsınız. Bu mesajı aldığınızda Aireplay`e yeniden geçip Deauthentication ataklarını sıklaştırmayı deneyebilirsiniz. Hatta farklı kullanıcılara farklı parametrelerle Deauthentication atakları da gerçekleştirebilirsiniz. Ya da bazı kullanıcıların modeme bağlanmalarını bekleyebilirsiniz.

Bizim denememizde Aircrack`in çok basit olan şifreyi kaba kuvvet atağıyla bulması yaklaşık 3,5 dakika sürdü. Burada bir noktaya dikkatinizi çekmek istiyoruz. Bizim şifremiz `computer` idi. Ve bu şifre BackTrack`in içerisindeki kelime listesinde bulunuyordu. Bu listede Türkçe kelimeler olmadığı için Türkçe bir parolayı kırmanız zorlaşacaktır. Ancak uyanık biri hemen tdk.gov.tr adresindeki bütün kelimeleri kopyalayıp, wordlist`in içerisine yapıştırabilir. Sonuçta wordlist dediğimiz .txt uzantılı bir metin belgesi... Ayrıca internet üzerinde parayla satılan 400-500 bin kelimelik özel wordlist`ler de bulabilirsiniz.

Güvenliği Asla Elden Bırakmayın

Görüldüğü gibi kablosuz internet ağlarını kırmak imkansız değil. Menzilinizdeki beleşçilerin ağınıza sızmasını istemiyorsanız, sağlam bir WPA şifresi belirleyin. Çok güçlü şifreler kullanmaya çalışın. Çünkü ağ bağlantı şifrenizi kıran biri sadece internet bağlantınızı sömürmekle kalmayabilir, çok önemli kişisel bilgilerinizi de ele geçirebilir.

Airodump ya da Kismet ile yapılan dinleme işlemlerinde şifreli de olsa bütün veriler kaydediliyor. şifre kırıldıktan sonra, Air Crack içerisindeki Air Decap isimli araç, kaydedilmiş verilerin hepsini açabilir. O zaman başınız gerçekten büyük belaya girebilir. Kafaya koyan birisi bu yöntemle bütün MSN konuşmalarınızı, özel dosyalarınızı, e-postalarınızı hatta banka şifrelerinizi bile ele geçirebilir.

ISO`YU CD`YE YAZMAK

Öncelikle DVD`mizdeki .iso uzantılı dosyayı masaüstünüze kopyalayın. Ardından kullanmakta olduğunuz CD/DVD yazma programını açıp, menülerden "Kalıbı Diske Yazdır" ya da "Burn Image" sekmesine girin. Masaüstünüze kopyaladığınız .iso uzantılı dosyayı seçerek, yazma işlemini başlatın.

SİSTEMİ ÖZELLEŞTİRME

Öncelikle startx komutunu kullanıp, masaüstüne ulaştığınızda Windows`tan aşina olduğumuz bir görünümle karşılaşacaksınız. O nedenle kullanım açısından çok sıkıntı yaşayacağınızı sanmıyoruz. Özelleştirmelere ise klavye ayarlarıyla başlıyoruz. Ekranın sağ alt tarafında, saat bilgisinin yanında, bayrak simgesiyle belirtilmiş olan klavye ayarlarını gördükten sonra üzerinde sağ tıklayıp, `configure` sekmesine girin. Açılan pencerede birçok ülke adı ve bayrağının listelendiğini göreceksiniz. Buradan Tr kısaltmasıyla tanımlanmış olan ülkemize ait klavye ayarlarını seçip, `add` komutuyla pencerenin sağ tarafına alın. Artık dilerseniz sağ tarafta yer alan ve ön tanımlı gelen TR haricindeki tüm klavye ayarlarını silebilirsiniz. Eğer F klavye kullanıyorsanız TR_F seçeneğini tercih etmelisiniz.

İngilizce bilginiz sistemi anlamanıza yeterli gelmiyorsa arayüzleri Türkçeleştirmeniz de mümkün. Bunun için bul.pcworld.com.tr/310 adresinden Türkçe dil paketini indirip kurabilirsiniz. Yaptığınız dil değişikliğinin aktif olması için oturumu kapatarak konsola düşüp, tekrar startx komutuyla masaüstüne geçiş yapmalısınız.

Kablosuz ağ adaptörünüzün doğru çalışıp çalışmadığını veya etrafta ağ olup olmadığını ise Wireless Manager ile öğrenebilirsiniz. Wireless Manager KDE bileşenlerinden biri olup, KDE menüsü > İnternet yolundan ulaşılabilir.

KLAVYE KISAYOLLARI

Tüm konsol çalışmalarınızda size faydası olacak bazı klavye kısayollarını belirtmekte fayda var. Örneğin CTRL+C kısayolu ile, o an çalışmakta olan programı sonlandırabilirsiniz. Yine daha önce kullandığınız komutlara ulaşmak için yukarı ok tuşunu kullanabileceğiniz gibi yeni bir komut girerken TAB tuşunu kullanırsanız girmekte olduğunuz komut otomatik olarak tamamlanacaktır.

Mini Sözlük

SSID: Kablosuz ağın ismidir. SSID`si açık olan modemler hangi kanalda yayın yapıyorlarsa bu kanalda saniyede

Beacon: Kablosuz modemler ya da access point`ler eğer SSID`leri gizli değilse saniyede birkaç kez havaya sinyal gönderip, açık olduklarını belli ederler. Bu sinyallere Beacon adı verilir.

Probe: Kablosuz ağ özelliği olan notebook ya da PDA benzeri cihazlar kendisini göstermek için bazı sinyaller gönderir. Bu sinyallere de Probe adı verilir.

BSSID: Kablosuz interneti dağıtan modemin ya da access point`in MAC adresi.

GUID: Açılımı Globally Unique Identifier... Dünyada bir eşi daha olmayan 128 bitlik hexadecimal değerdir. Windows ya da bazı Windows uygulamaları her türlü donanım bileşeni, yazılım, dosya ve kullanıcı için bir GUID üretir.

Kismet: Linux altında çalışan kablosuz ağları dinlemenize ve veri trafiğini kaydetmenize yarayan yazılım.

Airodump: Havadaki verileri yakalayıp kaydetmenize yarayan yazılım.

Aircrack: WEP ve WPA şifrelerini kırmak için kullanılan yazılım.

AirDecap: şifreli olarak toplanmış paketleri çözebilen açabilen yazılım aracı.

Aireplay: Kablosuz ağları yanıltmaya yönelik çeşitli saldırılar düzenleyebilen uygulama.

Aslında çoğumuz Alexa(www.alexa.com)‘nın ne olduğunu biliyoruz. Ancak ben artık listemdeki herkesin Alexa nedir diye sorup durmasından bıktım, listemde 100 kişi varsa 75′i “Alexa Nedir?” diyor ve böyle bir konu açayımda bilen bilmeyen herkes öğrensin dedim kendi kendime. Digital Imaging Camera Conversion: Records To MP3

Digital imaging technology is an amazing tool. It provides biometric information to help keep us safe, it reads symbologies so that we can get information delivered to us through a camera and sofware (up to 20 seconds of low-res video on our cellphone screens - a 4 meg file), and now this type of technology can take a picture of a round phonograph record and deliver a sound reproduction via a MP3 file converted from reading the grooves of the record.

What more versitility does one want from a technology?

You Can Play the Record, but Don't Touch

At the Library of Congress, in a small, white room with bright red carpet, physicist Carl Haber sits down to play a record from 1930. It's a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Iolanthe." But here's the strange thing: This record is broken.

"It looks like somebody just got hungry and took a bite out of it," says Haber. He has positioned the record on a turntable and fitted the broken piece back into place, like it's a jigsaw puzzle. "If we spun this thing fast, the piece would come flying off, you know, and maybe hit somebody," he says.

But this turntable doesn't spin like a normal record player. And there's no needle hovering over the record. Instead, there's a camera linked to a computer. It snaps detailed images of the groove cut into the disc, and uses the images to reconstruct the sound without ever touching the record.

Haber got the idea for this setup a few years ago, when he was driving to work and listening to NPR. He heard a report on how historic audio recordings can be so fragile that they risk being damaged if someone plays them by dragging a needle over their surfaces. It made Haber wonder if he could get the sound off old recordings without touching their delicate surfaces. He worked with a colleague, Vitaliy Fadeyev, and they managed to reconstruct sound on a 1950 recording of "Goodnight, Irene" performed by the Weavers.

This was just a proof of principle. They have now developed their hands-off technique to the point that it's being tested at the Library of Congress to see whether it's good enough to someday scan the library's vast archive of sound recordings.

One thing they've learned: A broken record is no problem. Haber clicks a mouse and the camera takes pictures of the groove on "Iolanthe."

"And by taking these pictures, it essentially just unwinds the record into a big long stripe," Haber explains.

The picture appears on Haber's computer screen. It looks like a black and white photo of a tire tread.

"Here's the break," he says, pointing to a line. "You can see, there's a little piece of dust, little scratch marks on it." The computer ignores all these flaws as it translates the images into sound.

IRENE was installed at the Library of Congress late last year. The library has millions of old audio recordings, and many are in poor condition or use obsolete formats. Peter Alyea, a digital conservation specialist at the library, says that to play old records, you often need trained technicians who can do things like choose the proper needle out of dozens of options. But if IRENE lives up to its potential, Alyea says, anyone could make a digital copy of an old record.

Alyea says it's like a photocopy machine for sound. "It brings the possibility of automation much closer to reality for these kinds of materials."

And given that he has thousands and thousands of records that he would like to digitize and make widely available, the prospect of automation is hugely attractive.

Exactly how good is IRENE at making digital copies?

One test involves a disc etched with simple tones to see how well IRENE can read some old-fashioned discs coated with lacquer. The library has thousands of these one-of-a-kind records. The format is obsolete.

But luckily, Haber says, audio engineer George Horn still makes them at Fantasy Studios in California. Horn cut some discs with well-defined tones. Haber says, IRENE can reproduce the tones amazingly well.

"The machine is not adding its own color. It's not adding anything of its own nature," he says.

Haber says IRENE does take some things away. He plays one record from 1953, a Les Paul and Mary Ford recording of the song "Johnny Is the Boy for Me." This record has a bad skip in it that's very apparent on a regular record player. But IRENE skips over the skip like it's not there.

IRENE isn't perfect. It removes pops and clicks, but it sometimes has a hissing noise in the background. Still, the Library of Congress finds all this encouraging enough that it has started testing the system on hundreds of discs, what Alyea describes as a kind of simulation of what a mass digitization project would be like.

When taking flat photographs, it can create a three-dimensional image of the groove on a record, or on an old wax cylinder. Haber been working with the University of California's Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology, to reconstruct sound from field recordings, like one wax cylinder made around 1911 that features a Native American called Ishi.

Haber says it's amazing to hear these voices from the past. "There's this whole human and cultural component to what we're looking at," says Haber, whose main job is studying subatomic particles at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. "That makes it wonderful."
